   ジョー・サンプルはクルセイダーズで活動する一方、1970年代以降はソロ・アルバムも精力的に発表している。これは1978年に録音した大ヒットアルバム。このアルバムの成功によってサンプルのソロ活動は弾みがついた。
   ジャズ・クルセイダーズからクルセイダーズにおけるサンプルは、テキサスファンクをベースにしたファンキーなピアニストという印象が強かった。ところが本作では、そうしたイメージを一新する新しい感覚の演奏を披露しており、なんともすがすがしくリリカルなピアノが特徴だ。クルセイダーズとはまた違うこのさわやかなテイストで多くのファンの支持を得た。要するにファンク色は隠し味に使い、叙情性を前面に打ち出したのが成功の要因だったようだ。曲はすべてオリジナル。サンプルはもともとコンポーザーとして優秀だったが、その鮮やかな手腕をこのアルバムで強烈にアピールした。どの曲も美しく、そしてチャーミング。抜群のメロディセンスとアコースティックピアノの美しさに魅了される演奏だ。（市川正二）

ジョー・サンプルのこのアルバムが発売された1978年頃は、音楽も拡散しクロスオーバーが俄かに脚光を浴び始まった頃だったように記憶している。「ソフト＆メロウ」が人気を博し、グローバー・ワシントン・Jr.やジョージ・ベンソンらのアルバムが記録的なヒットとなった。
そしてクルセイダーズの名手、ジョー・サンプルもその流れにうまく乗った一人。代表作であるこのアルバムも、ツボを押さえたヒットの匂いプンプンの中身に仕上がっている。
全体的に穏やかな楽曲が並び、当時の空気が手に取るようにわかる。ハッキリ言って“売り”に出た作風で実際に売れたアルバムなのだが、やはりこの天才のやる事にぬかりはない。とにかく各楽曲の完成度たるやハンパではなく、寸分のスキもない精密機械のような作曲とアレンジ能力は見事としか言いようがない。作風的に女性ウケするようなアルバムなのだが、このアレンジと演奏は「アンサンブルの勉強には最適」と言っていいほど完璧。小憎らしいほどパーフェクト。非の打ち所がない完成された作品で、おそらく当時のアマチュアフュージョン・バンドでこのアルバムの楽曲をコピーしたバンドはゴマンといたと思われる。
いやいや恐れ入りました。グローバー・ワシントンみたいにクサくなる寸前で仕上げているのも憎らしいですね。

「虹の楽園」である。Joe Sampleの特長はその美しいアコースティック･ピアノのタッチにあるが，本作でもその良さが余すところなく打ち出されている。Fender Rhodesを弾いてもその美しさは健在である。このアルバムはCrusadersのファンクネスから離れ，Joe Sample独自の美意識を表出させたものであり，後のソロ活動の原点となったアルバム｡曲も良い。

確かJ.サンプル自身のソロ1作目ですね。肩書きについては触れる必要はないでしょう。
恐らく、ライナーノートやその他のリソースでも、本作を表現する上で"リリカル"というワードが頻りに使われる事でしょう。ともすると"陳腐な"形容なのですが、確かにこの言葉を使わずにはいられないのも事実です。
同じピアノ弾きでも、G.ウィンストンのように"大自然の美しさ"をイメージさせるリリカルさではなく、メンタルに絡み付いてくるようなウェットさがあります。
G.ウィンストンを春の野原や山中のコテージで月を仰ぎ見ながら聴くのに対して、本作は雨の日に静かに部屋で聞く、のが良いかもしれません(^^;
