On "ALONGWAYTOGO," the second track from Gang Starr's Hard to Earn, rapper Guru draws a line in the sand between the "counterfeit" and the "legit" and challenges the listener, "If you don't know what you're doing, how the hell can you be real?" He goes on to explain that being "real" means walking the streets with a pistol in your belt and no bodyguards, ready to rumble when you don't get your "props." What he never bothers to explain is why this macho "Shaft" fantasy is more real than earning a business degree at Morehouse College and becoming a jazz fan (which is what Guru did in his earlier life as Keith Elam). Outflanked on the hip-hop/jazz front by Digable Planets and Us3, Gang Starr try to reestablish their hardcore credentials with an album that finds Guru rapping about sucker MCs and pistol-packing homeboys while Premier loops funky but repetitive beats behind him. --Geoffrey Himes

このアルバムは棄て曲なし、文句なしの1枚です。
DWYCK,CODE OF STREETS・・・全てですが、若かりしJERUもたまりません。
１家に1枚いや5枚は必要ではないかと思います。

これは、gang starrの３枚目で、DJ premierが一番革新的で、hip hopの更なる可能性へ、突き進んでいた時期の作品（リアルタイムとちょっとずれて聴いたんだけども）だって思っていて、このbeatは本当、ちょっと信じられないぐらい。テクノも、ミニマルも、hard coreなpremierのbeatの中で、信じられないぐらいの凝縮性で、がんがん脳の中に響いてきて、初めて聴いた時は（そんなにhip hopもテクノも聴いてなかった頃）何だこれ？　っていうのが第一印象で、だけど、それから６年ぐらい経って今でも聴いてるっていうのは、やっぱり、それだけの、根源的なやばいbeatをpremierが鳴らしてて（本当に、ぶっ壊れる勢い）その上にguruのしゃがれたcoolなrhymeが乗っかっちゃったら、普通に聴くのがしんどくなるぐらい、ちょーーーーーーーーーーーう、dope（深い、って意味だよね）何度聴いても、理解不可能、諦めて、brain stormをさまよってしまおう。
個人的には前半のキレ具合（特に最強にミニマルなtrackが）、後、すんげー乾いたguru（当時は、どんだけやばい人なのかって思った。最近の聴いてると知的で本当にhip hopをやってるすんごくcoreな人なんだって思うけど、premierのbeatじっと聴いてると、絶対混乱する、それについてく、rapをのせてくguru）のcoolなrap、どんだけ、hip hopっていうのが、根源的で、可能性を持った、それでいて今まであり得なかった音なのか、っていうのが、これ１枚通して聴いたらわかるって思う。すごい作品。完璧主義者のcrazy beat。おすすめです。個人的に。
すっごい、硬いっていうimage。hip hopっていうmusic formの持っている、とってもcoreな、それでいて、革新的なgang starr。の3rd。

ギャングスター、特にＤＪ　ＰＲＥＭＩＥＲの才能が完全に花開いた一枚です。
この時期のプリモに敵はいなかった。
03 Code of street、04 Brainstorm、08 Speak Ya Clout、09 DWYCK、10 Words From the Nutcracker、11 Mass Appeal、16 F.A.L.Aがお気に入りです。
