ギタリスト、デュアンが亡くなってからはじめての完璧なスタジオ録音のアルバム。1973年に発表された『ブラザーズ・アンド・シスターズ』は以前と趣が全く違う。しかし、もし他のバンドが発表していたら、このアルバムは不朽の名盤になっていただろう。オールマン・ブラザーズは泥臭いブルース・ロックから、もっとグルーヴィなサザン・ロックに傾倒し、ディッキー・ベッツや新しいピアニスト、チャック・リーウ゛ェルの影響を強く受けていることが、はっきり見て取れる。ベッツは「ランブリン・マン」、「サウスバウンド」、そしてクラシックな器楽曲、「ジェシカ」、フィナーレを飾るアコースティックで、ドブロでの彼の活動を発表したような「ポニーボーイ」のように、古めかしい音作りに貢献した。グレッグの影響力は、かつてほどではなく、わずかに「カム・アンド・ゴー・ブルース」や「ジェリー・ジェリー」に見られるだけだ。オリジナル．メンバーのベーシスト、ベリー・オークリーはこれらのセッションの間に他界したので彼の演奏は、収録曲の中でわずか2曲だけである（マーク・グレイルセイマー, Amazon.com)

Their first full studio album without guitarist Duane, 1973's Brothers and Sisters doesn't match what came before it but would probably be considered a masterpiece if it came from most other bands. The Allman(s) move away from their rougher blues rock toward a groovier Southern rock, a shift that reflects the increased influence of Dickey Betts and new pianist Chuck Leavell. Betts contributes chestnuts such as "Ramblin' Man," "Southbound," and the classic instrumental "Jessica," plus the acoustic finale "Pony Boy," which showcases his work on Dobro. Gregg's impact is not nearly what it once was, although his "Come and Go Blues" and "Jelly Jelly" hit the mark. Original bassist Berry Oakley passed away during these sessions and is heard on just two cuts. --Marc Greilsamer

デュエイン・オールマンに続いて、ベリー・オークリーをこのアルバム録音中に失うという悲劇を乗り越え、バンドとしてのキャリアの頂点を極めたアルバム。前作「EAT A PEACH」に片鱗の見えたディッキー・ベッツのカントリー色が表面に出て、ヒットナンバーの「RAMBLIN' MAN」を産み出す。
一方グレッグ・オールマンは「COME AND GO BLUES」でレイドバックしたヴォーカルを聞かせる。
アルバムのハイライトはインストの「JESSICA」だ。メロディアスでアーシーで全員が一体になった演奏が素晴らしい。飽きない7分30秒だ。
このアルバムから加入したチャック・リーヴェルのピアノが全編にわたって効いている。デュエインを上回るギタリストがいるわけはなく、ギタリストでなくピアノを入れたのは正解であった。デュエインのいたオールマンズの音は再現され得ないが、「レイドバック」したご機嫌な「サザンロック」の形を提示したアルバムとなった。
その他各楽曲ともレベルの高い演奏だが、グレッグとディッキーの嗜好の違いがはっきりと表れ、このあとの2人のソロ活動へと展開していく。

デュアン・オールマンが亡くなってから、残されたメンバーで発表したアルバムです。
古くからのオールマンブラザーズ・ファンの方にとっては違和感がある音楽性かも知れませんので評価が真っ二つに分かれるのですが、私的にはオールマン・ブラザーズバンドの最高傑作だと思っています。

それまでのオールマン・ブラザーズ・バンドはブルース色の強いバンドで、非常に暗いイメージの曲が多く、一方で玄人好みの凄まじい演奏テクニックを見せるバンドでした。

今までのブルース・ロック、ハードロックをぶち破る凄腕バンドでしたが、ポップな「明るさ」が薄かったのです。

この作品ではディッキー・ベッツの好みが前面に押し出されたため、明るいカントリー＆ウェスタン調の曲調になり、さらにジャズやフォーク、ブルース・ロックが見事にブレンドされ、全編極めてノリの良い好アルバムに仕上がっています。
ディッキーのギターが、うれしそうに「歌って」います。

通常、どのようなアルバムでも良く聴く曲、あまり聴かない曲ができてしまうものですが、このアルバムに関しては全てが名曲。
一つとして捨てる曲がありません。

レイナード・スキナード、マーシャル・タッカー・バンド、初期のドゥービー・ブラザーズなどのタイプのバンドがお好きな方には、超お勧め盤です。

昔ＦＥＮ（Far East Network）という在日米軍向けの極東放送では、ジャストの時間が近づくと突然音楽が流れ始め、それに被さるようにアナウンスが入って時刻を告げていた。当時中学生だったオレは、それらの曲が何かをも知らず、ただただ「カッコイイ！」と思いながら聞いていたのを思い出す。後に音楽好きの友達がまわりに集まり始めて、それらの曲が「Hip Hug-Her(Booker T.&MG's)」であり「Whammer Jammer(The J.Geils Band)」等であったことを知った。そしてこの「Jessica」である！これを知った時の喜び！！「Jessica」は今でもオレの最大のフェイバリットソングであるし、このアルバムはオレの大好きな曲がいっぱい詰まった、いつまでも色あせない青春の一枚である。しかしそんなオレも今では立派な？中年オヤジ・・・。それでも洋楽への思いは冷めやらず、偶然見つけた洋楽が歌えるお店で、夜ごと「Ramblin' Man」や「Statesboro Blues」を唄っているのだ。どこかのお店でこんな歌を歌っているオヤジを見かけたら、どうぞ声をかけてやってくれ。みんなで一緒に唄おうゼ！
