前作同様Mike Throneのプロデュースによるセカンド・アルバム。実験性を更に前面に出し、なおかつポップ・ソングとしても機能するという離れ業を成し遂げたアルバムと言っていいでしょうか。ラディカルに実験的、かつ幻想的でアトモスフェリックなサウンド・メイキングは、初期の「Pink Floyd」と並び称されるほどの衝撃的なサイケデリック・サウンドとなっています。薄く塗り込められたシンセの響きがポスト・パンクの息吹を予感させ、しかし、やっぱりスリー・コードでミニマルに展開するバンド・サウンドとのマッチングが絶妙なアルバムとなっています。極端に曲のテンポを落とした、ある意味アンビエントとさえ言える作り込まれたサウンドは、数あるポスト・パンク・バンドの中でも特に異彩を放っていました。そんな、ある意味暗くなったとも言えるサウンドは、歌詞のほうにも現れていて、かなりネガティヴで冷たく、「痛み」「自殺」といった言葉が多く、これは彼らがメジャー畑での音楽活動にかなりのストレスを感じていたからでしょうか。レコード会社との確執もあったようですし。前作の制作時にＥＭＩ側によって封印されたボツ・テイクの「Outdoor Miner」も収録されたインテリジェンス溢れる作品に仕上がっていますね。これも大傑作！

私が生まれる２年も前に、1978年に発売されたWIREの２ndアルバム。タイムリーで聴いたわけではないので、当時の状況は知らないのですが、2003年の今聴いても、感動できるアルバムです。まだパンク色の強かった１stアルバム発売から、たった１年で、こうも違うアルバムが出来てしまうとは、WIREが知的で実験的で進化し続けたバンドと言われる理由が、よく分かります。研ぎ澄まされた危なさをもった骨っぽいサウンドが、血や肉までも想像させ、非常にバラエティに富んだアルバムとなっています。
パンク性とひねくれたポップさと崇高さを兼ね備えた、実に不思議なアルバムです！！

ロッキンオン監修のボーナストラック脅威の13曲入りのセカンドアルバム。渋谷陽一氏始めロッキンオン編集者達のライナー付き。音は丁度パンクが終焉を迎えた頃のアルバムだけあって、パンクでもニューウェイブでもない、独特で微妙なグルーヴ感を持った音になっています。ヴェルヴェットアンダーグラウンド等好きな方にオススメ!
