このアルバムを聴いているとどうしても中期ビートルズやバーズ、ステイタス・クオなど
60年代のサイケポップロックバンドを聴いているような錯覚がしました。
80年代前半のアメリカのインディーシーンにはバーズを筆頭とした60年代ロックと
パンクをミックスしたようなバンドが多く出てきましたが、このバンドもその一例。

しかし他のバンドに比べてパンクの要素は少ないようで(若干テレビジョンを想起させるが)
代わりにサイケデリックな雰囲気が強いです。

地味なバンドですが、このバンドの甘くて青いサイケデリックな雰囲気に
私はハマりました。曲も良い曲揃いで、このまま忘れ去られるのはもったいない。

80年代インディロック好き、また最近のギターポップ好きにもお薦めのアルバムです。

当時、アメリカのカレッジ・シーンでペイズリー・アンダーグラウンド・ムーブメントというVelvet Undergroundなどを起源とした音楽の流れが起こっていた。
その、ペイズリー・アンダーグラウンド・ムーブメントの先頭に立ち、シーンを引っ張って行ったのがこのThe Rain Paradeです。
この他にも、Dream SyndicateやThree O'clockなどがペイズリー系アーティストとしては有名です。
そして、本題の今作『Emergency Third Rail Power Trip』ですが当時は『うたかたの旅立ち』という邦題でリリースされています。
メンバーはスティーブン・ロバック(Vo&Bass)、デイヴィッド・ロバック(Vo&Guitar,Percussion)、
マシュー・ピウチー(Vo&Guitar,Sitar)、ウィル・グレン(Keyboards& Violin)、エディ・カルワ(Dr)という５人構成。
同じペイズリー系のDream Syndicateの『The Days of Wine & Roses』を聴いて、自分はかなり良い手応えだったのでこのThe Rain Paradeにも手を出してみましたが、
予想外の地味なサウンドに少し戸惑いました。
しかし、何度も聴いていくとジワジワとThe Rain Paradeのやる気のなさげなヴォーカルとサイケデリックなギターに体が毒されていきます。
特に、「Talking In My Sleep」なんかが最高です。

この作品には変に過剰な期待などはかけずに地味に楽しんでいく作品だと個人的には思うので、これを買った人はじっくりと楽しんでみてください。

1983年頃のインディーシーンのレコスタ環境というのはやや微妙な気がする。デジタル機材への移行のはじまりの微妙さというか。。その中に移行期独特の不思議な良さみたいなものがパッケージされる事もきっとあると思う。Rain Paradeのこのアルバムはまさにそんな感じ。起伏の少ないメロディーがウェストコーストのダウナーなサイケデリックバンドみたい、冒頭のTalking in my sleep。例えばこのアルバムがリリースされた頃よりもほんの少し前、ZOO LABELがリリースした音楽と近い。でも、やっぱり1983年な分すっきりしてる。

2声のハモリ具合や、逆回転風ギターsolo、ゆっくり流れるビート感なんかがカッコいいI look around、大名盤という雰囲気は持ち合わせていないけれど、時々聴きたくなる感じ。

サイケでポップでサイケです。マジースターの前のバンド。80年代前半にこんなカッコいいバンドがいたなんてと思うほど素敵です！！特に7曲目が最高！！
