   ヨ・ラ・テンゴはいいバンドだと皆知ってはいたが、こんなにも心のこもったいい作品を作るとは。14年もの間地味なロックバンドの代表として活動してきたが、ニュージャージーのホーボーケンをベースとしたこのトリオがついに注目を浴びる時が来た。まるでだらだらと同じことに没頭しているうちに、ヨ・ラ・テンゴはマニアックなレコード・コレクターから90年代のインディ・ロックの古典主義者になってしまったようだ。ソニック・ユースやステレオラブ、ペイブメント、マイ・ブラッディ・バレンタインに代表される特徴をミックス。透明感のある声はこれまでも定評あったが、今までで一番心地良い。かたくなに多様性にこだわってきた夫婦兼マルチ・プレーヤー、アイラ・カピアンとジョージア・ハブレイに第3のメンバー、ジェイムス・マクニューは、今までも本来の姿であるポップ・ロック・バンドと、アート指向のノイズバンドの間を行ったり来たりしてきた。この『I Can Hear...』ではそんな葛藤と戦う必要はなくなったようだ。ノイズは健在だが、みな抑制が効いている。一番サウンドの分厚い「Autumn Sweater」「Sugarcube」「Moby Octopad」といった曲でも、耳に残るメロとさらに繊細なハーモニーを聴くことができる。「We're an American Band」（グランド・ファンクのカヴァーではない）は、サイモン＆ガーファンクルがジーザス＆ザ・メリーチェインズと一緒に歌っているかのよう。「Shadows」や「My Little Corener of the World」といった曲は、何と言ってもメロディーが印象的で、単純なアレンジが「シンプル・イズ・ベスト」を再認識させてくれる。インディ・ロックがヨ・ラ・テンゴに追いついたと同時に、ヨ・ラ・テンゴが彼ら自身に追いついたのだ。(Amazon.com, Roni Sarig)

『全体に漂う優しいノイズの洪水と静寂』。ヨ・ラ・テンゴの諸作品(90年代以降の)にありがちな形容だが、このアルバムこそ最もうまくこの言葉が形容されている作品であろう。ヨラを別にしてもだ。凶暴であるはずのノイズがひたすら柔らかい。心地良い眠気を誘う、
そう、このアルバムは夏の夜に聴くと格別に思える。なぜかクーラーではなく扇風機が欲しくなる…幼稚な表現かも知れないけれど、そうなのだ。僕はインストが正直あまり好きじゃない。長ければ尚更ウンザリする…でもヨ・ラ・テンゴのインスト曲はなぜか好きだ。例えば「Green Arrow」に歌が乗ったら、曲が台なしになるのではないか。そう思えるほど彼等のインストには完璧な曲が多い。確かにヨラはジャムセッションで曲を作り上げていくバンドだが、このアルバムのほとんどは曲(ソングライティング)先行だったのではないか、と思う。他のアルバムよりもポップな感じがするし、実際このアルバムをきっかけに世界中で注目が集まった。それに[曲]にふさわしいアレンジを選ばせてる。この『I Can Hear The Heart Beating As One』というサウンドトラックに相応しい曲を作り、相応しい歌を乗せるのみ。個々にも突出した曲が多い。最初に「Sugarcube」を聴いた衝撃は大きかった…
もちろん全てのディスコグラフィが素晴らしいヨ・ラ・テンゴの中でも、最高傑作とされている理由がわかる。

彼らのまさに代表作。ノイジーなのに聞くと安らぎを覚えるようなギターサウンド、
夏の夜を思い浮かべる虫の声が印象的なインスト、消え入りそうなほどやわらかい
フォークソングなどなど、同じような曲はひとつとしてないのにトータルとしてと
ても素晴らしいアルバム。どの曲も、音の一つ一つが丹念にやわらかく作られていて、

身をゆだねるとよい心地に慣れる極上のポップスです。

ヨ・ラ・テンゴ！聞いてみようかなと思う人には是非ともこの1枚をお勧めします。幻想的で暖かくてそして力強く、消して直接的ではなく、狂気まで含んで頭にガンときます。私はこの1枚からヨラワールドのとりことなりました。
人生を変えた1枚であることは間違いありません。全曲お勧めできます。

音楽を表現することが旨くできないのでこんな言葉になってしまいましてすみません。
