はっきり言うと「Brain Salad Surgery」「Works Vol.1」のアウトテイクの寄せ集め。11.Honky Tonk Train Blues、５.Barrelhouse Shake-Downはエマーソン名義のシングルＡＢ面でホーンもはいったＪＡＺＺナンバー。２.と４.は「Brain〜」のアウトテイク（後にシングル・リリース、Ｂ面は２.）。そういえば、当時４.Brain Salad Surgeryはアルバムのタイトル曲なのに海賊版でしか聞けない超レアな曲でしたが、苦労して手に入れて聴いたとたん、「なるほど！」とアルバム未収緑の理由を納得した記憶があります。イントロだけはカッコイイのだが、ちょっといまいち！（短いし）。つまり、アルバム「Brain〜」の収録曲にくらべるとあまりにも完成度が低いのですよ。長いタイトルの２.（シングルＢ面当時の邦題は「あなたのバレンタイン」）はソフトなタッチの曲でシンセ（ムーグ・ポリフォニック・アンサンブル）が小気味よい隠れた名曲。その他の曲も、曲自体は悪いわけではないのですが、当時の皆が期待した内容ではなかったし、いまいちインパクト弱いです。レイクのシングル曲、９.のクリスマス・ソングはオケなしのバージョン。パーマーの３．１０．はE.L&Pの方向性とはちょっと外れていますが「Works Vol.1」に収録されていてもおかしくない秀作なので★１つおまけ。

「Works」の試みは大失敗でしたね。「Brain Salad Surgery」の後、3人のソロとしての個性を押し出した3枚組みの大作を出すという企画は完全に空振りに終りました。

「Brain Salad Surgery」のあの息をも予想をも付かせぬ緊迫感溢れたサウンドを期待したファンは裏切られました。3人がその時やりたいと思った演奏をタレ流しているだけで、コンセプトも無ければ、音楽性も低い。

その後の、グループの空中分解のキッカケを作ってしまった罪深いアルバム。

これはヒドイものを作ったものだ。ポップぽい曲を寄せ集めて受けを狙ったのか、はたまた単に血迷っただけなのか。いやはや参りました。ひどい曲に迫力もテンションも感じられない演奏。一体どうしてしまったんでしょかねえ。いや、もう勘弁してください。
