　なんだかんだ言ってＥＬ＆Ｐのアルバムで一番よく聴いているのがこれです。一般的には「タルカス」、「展覧会の絵」、「恐怖の頭脳改革」という強力な代表作に比べるとやや地味という評価をされてるようです。

　確かにこの１ｓｔではバンドとしても、音楽性の面でもまだ完成されてはいません。しかし、その分これ以後の代表的な作品群よりも大きな可能性や、何か新しい音楽を生み出そうとする瑞々しいエネルギーというか熱意がひしひしと伝わってくるように感じます。

　斬新だけども、気品があって奥深い、ブリティシュプログレの魅力やその精神性みたいなものが凝縮されているようにも思います。

　演奏や楽曲についてはスリリングで荘厳なキーボードプレイばかりでなく、不気味な響きのインストから牧歌的な美しさを持った歌もの、各人のソロプレイをフューチュアーしたものまでじっくりと楽しめるものばかりです。特にクリムゾン時代よりも良い演奏をしているグレッグレイクが印象的です。

　ナイアシンもすごいと思いますし、とても魅力的ですけど、ＥＬ＆ＰやＵＫに比べると何かが足りない。この作品で聴ける音楽は、アメリカ人には絶対に出せない味や魅力がいっぱい詰まっていると思います。

　確かに彼らの代表作が持つような強烈なインパクトはないかもしれません。しかしとても味わい深いアルバムです。彼らに対する固定観念を捨てて聴いてみてください。きっと１曲目の不気味に歪むベースサウンドとそれに続くハモンドによってこのアルバムの不思議な世界に引き込まれることと思います。

　私は基本的にどんなバンド、グループでも初期の作品のほうが好きなのです。ビートルズも「アビィ・ロード」より「ラバー・ソウル」のほうが好きですし、ツェッペリンも「IV」より「I」のほうが好きです。

　そしてこのＥＬＰにもそれは当てはまります。完成度と言う意味では「恐怖の頭脳改革」などには及びませんが、この作品の中には、彼らの他の作品には無いエネルギーが満ちています。新しい仲間と、自分たちのやりたい音楽を創っていける喜びと意欲に満ちているのです。

　楽曲も粒ぞろいです。ファズベースが唸る「未開人」、グレッグ・レイク全開の「石をとれ」、３人の高い演奏力による、インタープレイが光る「ナイフ・エッジ」、これまた名曲の「ラッキーマン」など。「タルカス」のように派手ではありませんが、飽きがこない名曲ばかりだと思います。ジャケットもいいですね。まさに飛び立つ鳥。内容と、当時の彼らを表しているようです。

　ロック史の中で、トリオは数多くいましたが、これだけ分厚く、美しい音を出していたトリオは彼らだけではないでしょうか。

1970年11月20日発表。彼らのデビュー・アルバム。
1970年の春、結成されたELPは、8月23日プリマスのギルド・ホールでデビューを飾り、その6日後の第3回ワイト島ポップ・フェスティバルに参加、ハモンドとムーグを自在に操るキース・エマーソンのプレイが一躍注目を集めた。
そして、注目のデビュー・アルバムである。プログレ・ファンとてしては、耳の奥底に残るキング・クリムゾンの『クリムゾン・キングの宮殿』・『ポセイドン・キングのめざめ』での深遠な『声』の持ち主グレッグ・レイクがその場所に安住することなく、歩み出したこのトリオの音楽はどんなものなのかに注目が集まった。しかしその深遠さ・幅広さはこのファーストだけではとても出し尽くされてはいない。このアルバムはやりたい音楽をひとつひとつやって行く最初の一歩である。しかしながら、やりたい音楽の端々が既にこのアルバムに見え隠れしていたことも事実だ。
スーパー・エレクトリックな『The Barbarian』で始まる本作も本質はアコースティックであると僕は思う。2の『Take A Pebble』のプリペアド・ピアノ的なアプローチや4.『The Three Fates』の3部からなる組曲の見事さ。クラシック・ジャズ・ホンキートンク・カントリーといった多種多様な音楽を消化し、自らの美意識で再構成させた後の彼らの音楽のショーケースの様なアルバムである。芸術点満点といった感じです。
