Last Waltz後Robbie Robertsonを除くThe Bandのメンバーは時々再結成してツアーに出たりしていた。そんな中、Richard Manuelの死後にCBS Sonyとの契約がまとまり、スタジオでのレコーディングを開始する。若手のソングライター達から募った２０曲以上が録音されたらしい。だが、CBSからアルバムはリリースされないまま契約は終了する。その後にマイナーレーベルPyramidから発表されたのが本作だ。CBSでのマテリアルの再録音を含む全曲新曲からなる意欲作である。ＣＤカバーに鎮座するビックピンクのイラストが象徴するようにザ・バンドの原点回帰を目指した手触りのアコースティックな音作りが嬉しい。Big PinkやThe Bandを彷彿とさせる好アルバムだ。プロデューサーとして、John Simonの名前がクレジットされている。アルバム前半は昔のザ・バンドが蘇っている。後半は新しいメンバーもフィーチャーされたよりポップな新路線が披露されている。Robertsonの代わりにギタリストとしてJim Wieder、Manuelの代わりにドラマー兼ボーカリストのRandy CiarlanteとキーボードのRichard Bellが補充され音の厚みが増した。一曲（Country Boy)のみリチャードが天国から参加。問題のロビー抜きのSong Writingだが、優秀なライターからのザ・バンドにフィットした佳曲揃いである。Bob Dylan, Brues Springsteen, Muddy Waters等のカバーも含み飽きさせない。そして何よりも素晴らしいのは,あの暖かみのあるサウンドや人生の裏街道を歩く人々を低い目線から眺めた歌詞が戻って来ていることだ。レボンはブラウンアルバムを彷彿とさせるほどに元気だし、リックは最後の名唱"Too Soon Gone"を歌った。ガースはオルガンよりホーンをプレイするようになったけど．．．
本作にも収録されなかった未発表に終わったCBSでのスタジオ録音が、１０曲以上非公式音源として出回っているがその出来は凄い。いつか日の目を見て欲しい。

　2曲目から引き込まれていき、Too Soon gone~country boyへと
続き、ﾘﾁｬｰﾄﾞﾏﾆｭｴﾙの歌声はあまりにも悲しくも美しい。
このｱﾙﾊﾞﾑは買って良かった。last Walzのﾚﾋﾞｭｰの人ありがとう。
何度聞いても飽きない音楽とはこのような音楽ですね！

９３年発表の再結成第一弾アルバム。８３年からの実質再結成のツアー、リチャードの死、その間の補強メンバーの変動、ジュルス・シアーらをメンバーに迎えて製作されたＣＢＳでのアルバムのオクラ入りなどのたくさんの事柄を乗り越えてやっと発表された作品。本当に長い道のりだったと思う。新しいメンバーに迎えられたのは　ジム・ウィーダー（Ｇ）、ランディ・シャーランテ（Ｄｒ）、リチャード・ベル（ｐ）の三人だが、フーターズのメンバーなどゲストも多数参加しており、ジョン・サイモンもプロデュースのみならずプレイヤーとして参加している。
カフーツ時代を思わせる１．はなかなかの曲でワクワクさせてくれる。一変してルール・ミュージックっぽいホブ・ディラン作の２．は今までは少し違ったモダンな雰囲気がある。リックとリヴォンがヴォーカルを交互に分け合う味わい深い曲だ。フィドルが印象的な哀感溢れる３．も素晴しい。４．はブルース・スプリングスティーンの曲だが、それっぽさを感じさせない見事な仕上がり。５．はＣＢＳでのアルバムで製作された曲。８５年録音のリチャードの歌声が聞ける６．などはファンなら無視は出来ないだろう。それを除いても本当に心にしみる曲であり、このアルバムのハイライトだと思う。
全体的にはアイランド以降といった雰囲気のやや洗練された感のあるアルバムだが、ザ・バンドとという名前に恥じるような作品ではない。薄味だが旨味はギッシリ。そんな作品だ。
