僕がオーティス･レディングを初めて聞いたのは中学生の時のこと。当時、僕の音楽の中心に鎮座ましましていたRCサクセションの清志郎が「オーティス･レディングは最高にいかしている」と言っているのを聞いて『これは聴いてみなければ』と思ったのがきっかけだった。中学生には、オーティス･レディングの良さはなかなか理解できなかったけれど、大きくなるにつれてしみじみと良さが分かるようになった。

Dock of the Bayは、名曲中の名曲だが、このベストではI've been loving too longなども捨てがたい。
スティングが「音楽は一瞬の静寂が大切で、Dock of the bayの瞬間的な静けさこそ、自分が最も見習いたいものの一つだ」と言っていたが、まさにその通りだと思う。

「何もいいことが無かった。人がやれといったことは何一つできない。ただサンフランシスコ湾を見て座っているだけだ」と歌う男の静けさには永遠が宿っていると思う。

若くして事故でなくなったオーティスですが、彼の歌声はいつまでも感動的で、新鮮です。
ラブ・ソングも圧倒的に素晴らしいですし、ハードなプレイも最高にいいです。
こんなに素晴らしいエンターテナーは他にちょっといないのでは、と思います。

非常に短い活動期にもかかわらず、ほんとうに名曲ぞろいで、初めての方はこのベスト盤をお聞きになるといいのではないでしょうか。

「ああ、この曲かあ！　これすごく好きだったけど、この人だったのかあ！」という曲がきっと入っていると思いますよ。

Otisを、初めて聞く人には、Best盤から入るのもＯＫかも知れません。
でも言っておきますが、Otisのオリジナルアルバムは、全て最高の出来で、
Bestに入らない様な曲でも、名曲が沢山ある事を、知っていて下さい。
もし、これを聞いて、Otisが最高と思えるのなら、全てのオリジナル
アルバムを買う事を薦めます。私は当然、全部持っています。
Liveは、「Live in Europe」に敵うものは無く、他のLive盤を
買っても、不完全燃焼になる事は否めません。だから、それは
あまり、お薦め出来ませんね。夜に独りで、好きなお酒でも飲みながら、
是非Otisを堪能して下さい。
