20数年前このレコードの輸入盤を上野で買ったとき、店員のお兄さんから「これは、絶対いいよー」と言われたことが忘れられない思い出として残っている。家に帰り聞いてみると、ジャケットから受けた印象ほどドブルースではなかったけど、「古き良き日」を取り戻そうというコンセプトは気に入りました。ブルースの渋い選曲もグッド。

これはリーダーのバターよりも、表面的には、ジェフ・マルダーとエイモス・ギャレットが中心のアルバムだと思う。この二人のカントリー・フレイバー溢れるインテリジェントでエレガントなブルース・プレイは聞き物だ。白人ブルース・マンとしてシカゴ・ブルースを長年追求していたバターだけど、黒人と同じ土俵で勝負するのではなく、一歩引いて、無理せずに白人らしさを隠さず出してブルースをプレーすることでステップ・アップし、本家の黒人越えを果たしたと思う。ウッドストックのハイダ・アウェー的雰囲気と相まっていい味出しています。

久保田真琴と夕焼け楽団のディキシー・フィーバーに参加していたロニー・バロンのピアノと個性的なボーカルもニューオーリンズ丸出しでエクセレント。それに弱冠22歳のクリス・パーカーのどこまでもクールで的確かつ正確な刻みもグレート。

ミシシッピー出身のブルース好きなアメリカ人（白人）と付き合っていたとき、"Top of the White Blues"と言って、買ったばかりのこのＣＤを貸してあげたら、国（ミシシッピー）に帰ったら絶対このオリジナル・アルバムを見つけると意気込んでいました。コアなデルタ・ブルースではないけだ、白人だって自分達の特長を生かした、ブラックに負けない最高のホワイト・ブルースが出来ると言う証。

ブルース・バンド解散後、バターフィールドが新たに結成した「ベターデイズ」ファースト・アルバム。ボビー・チャールズ、マリア・マルダー、デイヴィッド・サンボーンらがゲスト参加。バターフィールド自身の曲は一曲にとどまっており、ロバート・ジョンスンの1（コーザ・ノストラがイントロをどこかでパクっていた）や、パーシー・メイフィールドの名曲2などの、ブルース、ソウルのカヴァーに、メンバーのオリジナルを数曲加えた構成。ジャニス・ジョプリンが歌うはずだった6は名曲だと思うし、アップ・テンポの9も、個人的にはお気に入り。バターフィールドのブルースは本物だ。聴き終えたあと、心地よく眠りにつける。

アグレッシブなブルース求道者だったポール・バターフィールドがバンド名から「ブルース」をはずして結成した「ベターデイズ」。エイモス・ギャレット、ロニー・バロン、ジェフ・マルダーといったウッド・ストックの仲間達と送る珠玉の一枚です。バターフィールドのヴォーカル・ハープはもちろんバックの達人たちのカラーも前面に出し、渋くて深い味わいに仕上がっています。

「Please Send Me Someone to Love」でのジェフの枯れた唄やエイモス・ギャレットの甘くとろけるような脳天逆落としギター、「Broke My Baby's Heart」でのロニー・バロンの柔らかいながらも強い唄声、絶妙にからむポール・バターフィールドのハープと聞きどころ盛りだくさん。

一曲ずつシリアスに聴けば深い音楽性を堪能でき、ＢＧＭ風に流しながらの読書やコーヒーブレイクにももってこい。楽しめてクセになる長年の愛聴盤です。
