この作品が発売された時（８８年だったみたい）、雑誌でバンド名を見て、レビューで「暗い」と書いてあったので（MISSIONのような）ダークなＮＷバンドと勝手に思い込んで購入した事を覚えています。
カナダ出身のバンドによるアメリカン・ルーツミュージックの探求。
本当に美しい作品です。色で例えると「モノトーン」、若しくは「暗い青」かな。

この作品では、カントリー・ブルースが優しく物憂げに演奏され、ノスタルジックな曲調でありながら、８０年代ＮＷを通過した感触も感じ取れます。
どういう表現が当て嵌まるのか？「憂鬱」「気だるさ」「静謐」「優しさ」ですか。それらの要素が聴き手を「癒し」てくれます。
私的には冒頭の２曲「Mining for Gold」「Misguided Angel」とVELVETSのカバー「Sweet Jane」が特に気に入っています。

「夜」と「お酒」が似合う作品です。できればバーボンで。

私がはじめてこのＣＤを手にしたのは18才、洋楽もメタルなどを好んで聴いていた時期でした。そんななか、友人にすすめられて聴いたこの一枚。
衝撃的でした。1.Mining For Goldと2.Misguided Angelの曲間には、メンバーのカウントをとる声がかすかに聞こえます。教会での録音であったそうですが、その音の響きがまた、たまらなくいいです。

夜、部屋の明かりをおとして、好きなアルコールを片手にいつまでも繰り返し聴いてみてください。聴きこむほどに、深くなります。

このアルバムが出たのは、私が20代前半の頃でした。NMEの新人部門の人気NO.1とか、
日本のプレス曰く「ヴォーカルのマーゴはカナダの中島みゆきだ」とか、
教会でスタンドマイク1本で録音されたとか、そんなふれこみだったのを憶えています。
その頃知人のカナダからの留学生にこのバンドをmy　favoriteと伝えたところ、
「よく知ってるわね。私も大好きなの」と意気投合しました。

と、思い出話はここまでで、本作は私の生涯の愛聴盤の1枚です。
特に好きなのは2曲目の出だし。はっと息を飲む静謐さが漂っています。
極めて少ない音数で淡々と深い表現している本作が、新人バンドの1作目とは信じがたい。
＃10でベルベッツのSweet Janeをカバーしているのも個人的に気にいってます。
その後の彼らの作品でも本作を越えるものはないかも・・・自信をもっておすすめ。
