Rickと言えば、米国ソープオペラ「General　Hospital」の医師役でその人気を不動にしたアーティストであり、当時はアイドルとして名を馳せた。歌詞や曲調もグルーブ感いっぱいで、ファンとしては嬉しかった時代だったが、専門家からは酷評されたものである。そんなRickが、それまでのアイドル路線を捨て、突然メッセージ色の濃い作品を作り上げたのがこのアルバムだ。中国の道教をモチーフに、様々な角度から深いメッセージを伝えてくる。勿論、ヒットチャートを駆け上る類ではないが、この作品以降のRickの世界観を決定付ける内容である（但し、88年発表の「Rock　Of　Life」が、Rickにとっては一番強いメッセージ・アルバムだと思う）。だが全編に渡って暗いという訳ではなく、程よいデジタル処理や曲の抑揚はツボをおさえた出来栄えだ。中でもRickの最高傑作と信じて疑わない34のSTATE　OF THE　HEARTや、スマッシュヒットを記録した1Dance　this world awayや2Celebrate youthの出来も良い。ラストの11My father's chair　は、亡き父への想いを詩にしたRickの、優しさに溢れる名バラードで感動ものだ。ミュージシャンも豪華な顔ぶれで、持っていて損のないアルバムと言える。

当時は次代の音楽と言われていたヒップホップを全般に取り入れた問題作。このアルバム発売当時のリックのイメージは熱いストレートなロックンローラーという感じで、ファンもそういったリックが好きだと言う人がほとんどでした。仲間内で「リックよ、おまえもか！？」と語り合っておりました。よってこのアルバムはヒットせず、一般的にはイメージの薄いアルバムですが、このアルバムに収録されている「STATE OF THE HEART」は出色の名曲で、私が知る限りは８０年代洋楽を愛する方の多くがこの曲に深い思い入れがあります。極端な話、リマスターされたこの曲を聴くためだけにでも購入するだけの価値はあると思います。

初めに僕は音楽的な知識があまりないことを申し上げた上で、このアルバムのアレンジはかなり複雑です。各種コンピューターを駆使しています。リック自身も新しい音楽を作ろうと考え制作したと語っています。アルバムタイトルも中国の哲学から引用しています。ここまで書くと、小難しい音楽、難解な音楽かと思われがちですが、まったくそんなことはありません。踊れます。何度でも聴けます。その度に新しい発見があります。リックの他のアルバムのようにドライブには多少不向きかもしれませんが、ものすごくかっこいいアルバムに仕上がっていますし、リックワールドを確立したアルバムとも言えます。
