Pre-Lilith Fair, McLachlan had critical acclaim and a cult following but was otherwise just another hard-working female singer/songwriter--one who wasn't blasting down doors with overt sexuality or popping along in front of a male Svengali. Similar in their emotional urgency to her more recent work but delightfully less polished, these folk-rock songs are surprising gems. If not for McLachlan's poignant vocals, lyrics like "Your love is better than ice cream" (on "Ice Cream") would sound childishly absurd (especially alongside deeper material like "Hold On"), but here they're given just as much respect as the weightier issues she explores. 「SURFACING」「AFTERGLOW」と、近年ますます艶のある音楽で幅広い層にアピールし続けるサラですが、先述の2枚合わさっても到底かなわないのが本作「Fumbling Towards Ecstasy」でしょう。捨て曲がないのは当然の話ですが、歌詞・サウンド・ビジュアル・思想などが統一された奇跡的なアルバムだと思います。ジョニ・ミッチェルやカーペンターズなどに影響されながらも、パンクミュージックの大ファンであるというサラ。他のアルバムではAC／DCのカバーもやってのけるほど。それにしてもここでの歌唱は録り直す必要などまったくないほどの完璧さです。「POSSESSION」「GOOD ENOUGH」「HOLD ON」「MARY」「ICE CREAM」などなど曲順もいいし粒揃い。「静」の魅力ではなく「動」であるまさに血の通ったアルバム。説得力があり人を動かすパワーを持つこれらの曲でも分かるようにサラは人間の本能そのものにメロディを付けるのが本当に上手いです。まさに職人技。サラはいわゆるロックミュージシャンではないけど、根底に棲んでいるのは間違いなくロックの魂であり、彼女はロックミュージシャンである。

寡作なサラの新作が出たと聞いて急いで買いに行った日が懐かしい。
もう10年以上前なのに、いまでも取り出して無性に聴きたくなる。
それほど、私の心を掴んで話さない魅力のある曲ばかり。
美しくて、妖しくて、感動的。
サラの持つ良さが詰め込まれたアルバムだと思っている。
もし、一枚だけCDを持っていっていいと言われたなら、これを選ぶ。

美しく、神秘的で力強い声にとにかく圧倒されます。

Sarahの1番の魅力はどんなに静かな曲でも何処か『激しさ』があるという所だと
勝手に思っているのですが、その『激しさ』はこのアルバムがピークかな、と思いました。
