常に緻密な音づくりと曲ごとにボーカリストを変えてまで、より自分のイメージに近い音づくりを続けるAlanParsonsの初期の一押しがこのアルバム。特に表題曲(邦題は『運命の切り札』だったと思う)と『Time』を聴いて欲しい。ずっと心に響き続ける大傑作。

　前作「イブ」のポップなアプローチに続いて1980年に出された通算5枚目のアルバム、「評論家から絶賛されるような良質な音楽を作ってもヒットが出なければ意味がない」という信条を持つアランは当時は非常にポップでオンタイムな曲を書く才能があり、エリックウルフソンのソフトな感性がアランのアクの強い感性を中和させる作用があったのではと思う。エリック抜きの90年代のアランパーソンの作品を聞くとアク抜きされていない濃厚な味に食傷感に似た後味の悪さを感じてしまう。このころの作品にはエリックの吹き抜けるような爽やかな感性がみなぎっていて、どの作品もすばらしい出来である。きっとエリックは性格も淡白な人に違いない。大ヒットした「タイム」のボーカルを聞くと、政治家のような他の人を押しのけて這い上がるような強烈なイメージが湧いてこない。僕は美空ひばりの「川の流れのように」よりも数倍こちらのほうが爽やかで好きだ。第2弾シングル「ゲームズピープルプレイ」もアコギとアコピのしぶい使い方や間奏部の神秘的なシンセパート、その後に続く２つのギターソロの応酬などこれまでの作品にはなかった攻撃的な曲である。この曲の構成は「レッツトークアバウトミー」でリサイクルされている。B面はカジノの賭けにはまる恐怖や警鐘について歌った組曲がじつにシブい仕上がりでまとめられている。こういう曲を作れるからアルバムアーティストとしての高い評価に結びつき、シングルだけではなく、アルバムの売り上げにもつながっていくのだろう。ポップなA面と聞き応えあるB面の構成が、音楽素人と玄人の両方を満足させるものになっている。次作はさらにこの傾向が強まり、本作を足がかりにビッグヒットを生み出す運命が待っている。ライブを全くやらないのにほとんどラジオや雑誌での宣伝のみで勝負するとは、、、自信がなければできることではない。

アラン・パーソンズ・プロジェクトの最新（２００７）リマスターシリーズ待望の日本盤ですね。
全１０作品が、紙ジャケ＆貴重なボートラ付きでリリースされます。
しかも、高音質ＳＨＭ−ＣＤでの企画のようです。
とは言え、既に輸入盤で全て購入済みなので、全１０作品新たに購入は、ちと辛い。
それでもＡＰＰの大ファンとしては、
あのエリック・ウルフソンのボーカル曲が多く収録された４作品は、購入せずにはおれません！！

このプログレ・ポップな名盤４つはぜひお試しください！！
