   カナダ出身の女性歌手、ホリー・コールは映画『バグダッド・カフェ』の主題歌<6>をカヴァーして、一躍時の人になった。本作はその出世曲を含むホリー初期の代表作。録音は91年。日本盤は『コーリング・ユー』というタイトルで92年に発売された。ピアノとベースを伴ったシンプルな編成をバックにスタンダードをゆったりと歌っている作品。霧の向こうから妖精の声が聴こえてくるような不思議な魅力を秘めたアルバムで、ハスキー・ヴォイスによるモノトーンの歌声がなんともいえぬ風情を醸し出している。ホリーには2度インタビューしたことがあるけど、歌のイメージと違って、いたって陽気で気さくな女性なのが意外だった。ドラマティックな歌い方、そして俗世間を離れたような孤高の歌声は、彼女の芝居心の反映ではないかと個人的には思っている。というのも、ホリーはクルト・ワイルらのジャーマン・キャバレー・ミュージックが大好きだからだ。それにしても出世曲<6>のインパクトは強烈で、そのハイトーンがいつまでも耳から離れない。（市川正二）

当該のManhattanは星４つ、何故かと言われれば録音が悪い（ADD）
Alert Recordsのカナダプレス（DDD）なら星５つ（６つ）
これを聞いたらこのManhattan盤は聞けなくなる。
他にDon't smoke in bed、Girl talkなどもAlert RecordsのHolly Coleの中でも録音がよい。
おそらくオーディオ誌やオーディオ関係の録音の良い音盤にこれらは挙げられていると思う。

彼女の生ライブを２度聞いたことがありますが、Alert盤は生の感触が伝わってくる。

国内EMI盤およびManhattan盤でも浸るには十分、暗がりの中で酒でも交わしながら聞いていたい。

Calling　Youでお馴染みのホリー・コール。彼女のJazzサウンドはどの曲にも上品なオシャレさを添付させてくれている。　ストリングやピアノだけのシンプルな伴奏も彼女の深い声をひきたててくれる。Calling　You含めて、映画のワンシーンに挿入できそうな曲がそろった一品です。

　1963年生まれのカナダ出身のヴォーカリスト、ホリー・コールの出世作で、アルバムとしては"Girl Talk"に続くセカンド・アルバムになります。ヴァイオリンが2曲に、バスクラが1曲に入っているほかはピアノ・ベースとのトリオで録音されています。
　ホリー・コールはジャズ好きの兄に影響されてジャズを聴くようになったそうで、好きなアーティストにサラ・ヴォーンやビリー・ホリデイ、アニタ・オデイあたりを挙げています。ここで取り上げられた"I’ll Be Seeing You"と言えばビリー・ホリデイですし、"Honeysuckle Rose"も個人的にはサラ・ヴォーンの名唱がまず思い浮かびます。そういう意味ではホリー・コールの音楽の背景が見えるような選曲と言えるでしょう。
　とはいえ、この音楽がジャズ・ヴォーカルに分類されるのには抵抗があります。チャップリンや「バグダット・カフェ」のテーマといった映画関連の曲からトム・ウェイツやライル・ラヴェットなど個性的なシンガーの曲を収録している通り、決して彼女自身ジャズをやっているつもりではないと思います。だいたいリズムの取り方が全然ジャズではありませんしね。・・・かと言ってポップスに分類するのも躊躇われる渋めのシンプルなスタイルで、両方の影響を受けつつ自身の音楽を目指すバラード・シンガー、という曖昧な表現がいいのかもしれません。
　ちなみに何故か"Blame It On My Youth"は入ってません（1993年の"Don't Smoke In Bed"に収録）。
