   本作『Flowers in the Dirt』は、1980年代のポールのベスト・アルバムのひとつとなった。エルヴィス・コステロとアルバム中の3曲を共作したことがポールにとっていい刺激になったのだろう。コステロの参加した「My Brave Face」、「You Want Her, Too」、「That Day Is Done（ふりむかないで）」は、複雑で苦みが効いている。こういう味わいは、ポールが単独で書いた曲にはまれなものだ。

前作PRESS TO PLAYの完成間直に出演したプリンス・トラストへの出演がきっかけででライブ演奏への情熱を再燃させたポールはフライデーナイトセッションなるもので、１０代の頃から大好きだったロックンロールスタンダードを歌いまくり、王様ポールに辛口なコメントも炸裂させるエルヴィス・コステロと共作したことで忘れかけていた自分の持ち味を思い出し、ついにキラキラのポップチューンMy Brave Faceなどが生まれた。やはりポールはライブ演奏することを前提に作られた作品に良さがでる。ただ、80年代のこねくり回すトゥーマッチなアレンジがまだ残る作品も多く、彼自身のクオリティーが炸裂するのは、この後ワールドツアーを成功させてOff The Groundまでまたねばならない。

　このアルバムのポイントはやはりエルヴィス・コステロとのソングライティングです。僕もこのアルバムを聴くまでは彼のことはほとんど知らなかったのですが、このアルバムとポールとの共作シングル「ヴェロニカ」で彼にも興味を持ち始めました。

　そしてこのアルバムを引っさげてポールは約１０年ぶりのワールド・ツアーに出て前代未聞の大成功を収めたのですが・・・その日本公演ではビートルズ・ナンバーの時とこのアルバムのナンバーの時との客席の「反応の差」にやや寂しい思いをしたものでした。

ＰＳ「ザット・ディ・イズ・ダーン」のコステロ・バージョンは２枚組の「ヴェリー・ベスト・オブ・エルヴィス・コステロ」に収録。必聴です。

「パイプス・オブ・ピース」以降、やることなすこと裏目に出てばかりだったポール・マッカートニーがエルヴィス・コステロのサポートを受け、久しぶりにファンの溜飲を下げた作品ですが、このデラックス版、僕も持ってはいますが、今に到るまで新作が発表されるたびに買うことを余儀なくされる、ちょっと釈然としない特別仕様の先駆けだと思うのですが、いかがでしょう。御大ポールの前に我々は、バカな消費者でいるしかないのでしょうか。それでも出されたら買いますが、買ってよかったと心から思える「特別仕様」を願いたいものです。御大自身がこれだけメディアに露出している今日、新作のインタビューＣＤなんか、英語の解せないほとんどの日本のファンは望んでいないはず。
