   デビューから65年前半までのアルバム未収録曲18曲をすべて収録しているため、<4><6>のような大ヒット曲から、シングルB面曲、EP収録曲、さらにヒット曲のドイツ語バージョンといった珍品まで、バラエティに富んだ内容となっている。1曲目はリンゴがドラムを担当したオリジナルシングルバージョン。（星野吉男）

やっと「抱きしめたい」をCDで聴くことができた。それもドイツ語ヴァージョンまでも。これで公式にビートルズ作品として発表されたもののほとんどをCDで聴けるわけだ。Vol.1は62年~65年,Vol.2は65年~70年に発表された曲で構成されている。同時代にこれらのシングル曲を聴いた世代にとって総てがここから始まったという思いがわくかもしれない。時代の気分を見事に先取りしていたことを再確認させるビートルズの変容の歴史を伝える2枚のアルバムがこれ。

パストマスターズはオリジナルアルバム未収録の曲を集めた企画盤です。それ以上のものでもそれ以下のものでもありません。ビートルズはアルバムとシングルは別物という考えでした。シングル曲はニューアルバムの予告編として出され、多くのシングル曲がオリジナルアルバムには未収録だったのです。ビートルズを代表するような大ヒットナンバーの抱きしめたいやシーラヴズユーでさえオリジナルアルバムには未収録だったのです。(注、本作収録のラヴミードゥーはシングルヴァージョンでプリーズプリーズミー収録ヴァージョンとは別物) したがって、オリジナルアルバム未収録曲を集めるとどうしてもビートルズを代表するような有名曲中心の品揃えになってしまうのです。そのためベスト盤という誤解を招くことになってしまうのです。また、切り売りということも断じてありません。あくまでコンセプトはオリジナルアルバム未収録の曲を集めたアルバムなのです。それ以上のものでもそれ以下のものでもないのです。

意外に分かってない人が多いようで。この「パスト・マスターズ」シリーズ２枚は、オリジナル・アルバムがCD化された際に、アルバム未収録曲をCDで補完するためにリリースされたものです。アルバム全てとこの２枚をもって、当時あったビートルズの公式楽曲を全部入手できますよ、という意味合いの作品です。

なんでこんなのがあるのかというと、アナログ時代には、ビートルズの曲を全部揃えようというのはかなり大変な作業だったんです。それがCDになってこの２枚が出たおかげで、コンプリートが圧倒的にラクになったという経緯があります。
そのへんの経緯を知らずに見ると確かに寄せ集めベスト盤にも思えちゃうので、誤解も多いのでしょう。でもこれらは他のテキトーなコンピレーション盤とは、そもそものコンセプトからしてまったく違う存在なわけです。

シーラヴズユーや抱きしめたいのドイツ語ヴァージョンは、本アルバムでＣＤ初登場でした。
その他の収録曲に関してもＣＤ化されたオリジナルアルバムでは聴くことのできない曲を集めているのです。切り売りなる言葉はあてはまりません！
こんなことはちょっとビートルズに詳しい人なら誰でも知っている事実なのですが、自信満々に言われると信じてしまう方もいらっしゃるかもしれませんので訂正しておきますね！
