正直、驚いた。
リックは、フロイドの「The Wall~壁」を突き抜けてしまっていたのだ。この印象的なジャケットが、これほどアルバムの内容と密接に結びついているとは。

タイトルにした“自らの過去を直視する勇気をもつ、全ての人たちへ”とは、このアルバムのブックレットの、Thanks to・・・に挙げられている、リックに個人的に関わる人たちに続いて、最後に書かれているもの。そう、このアルバムは、リックが「ザ・ウォール」から「鬱」の頃にかけて経験した、自身の精神的危機から脱した後の境地にいるからこそ、このように聴く人に爽やかに呼びかけられる自信に発しているのだろう。

音楽的には対にやや近いが、彼の穏やかな世界観やヴォーカルが、聴く者を魅了する。
Reaching for the RailとBreakthroughで、シンニード・オコナーが参加しているのも非常に興味深い。前者では、リックとのデュエットを聴くことができる。

個人的には、ピンク・フロイドメンバーのソロ作品では、シド・バレットの「帽子が笑う、不気味に・・・」、「その名はバレット」と共にベストと呼べる、非常に思い入れが強い作品。フロイドファンは、ソロ作品というとデイヴとロジャーのものに目が行きがちだが、是非聴いてもらいたい一枚！

　ピンクフロイドの鍵盤奏者による2枚目のソロアルバム（1996年発表）。
　リチャード・ライトというと、ピンクフロイドの中では注目度が低いですが、この作品では、彼がピンクフロイドにもたらしていたものはどんなものだったのかがわかりやすく提示されています。なおかつ、その世界が、非常に濃密で深遠で、純化された語り口で語られていて、非常に聞きごたえのあるアルバムです。
　具体的に言えば、ピンクフロイドの曲で、彼の名がクレジットされているものの中でも、例えば“echoes”や“the great gig in the sky”、『THE DIVISION BELL』収録の“marooned”“keep talking”“wearing inside out”などから連想できる方向性のものです。さらに言えば、ピンクフロイドから、デヴィッドギルモアのブルーズやロックの伝統に忠実な楽曲とギター、ロジャーのイデオロギーとヒステリックな語り口、ニックメイスンのハチャメチャなドラミング（笑）を引いたら、ある程度この作品に近いものが想像できると思います。
　この作品を聞いて特に思うのが、ピンクフロイドの中でも、「冷ややかさ」「底知れぬの暗黒に誘われるような（？）感覚」という言葉で表されるような部分。こういう感覚は彼が主にもたらしていたんだと、このアルバムを聞くとわかります。ピンクフロイドの、人工的な物理音や人間の耳に違和感のある音を空間的に配置するような手法は、「冷ややかさ」を演出していましたし、ウォーターズもギルモアもそういう表現を好んでしていたと思います。しかし、リチャードの「冷ややかさ」は、単なる感覚的な、あるいは生理的な冷ややかさではなくて、もっと「ドキッとしてしまう」ものだと思います。自分の中の暗い部分、暗黒面（←大げさですいません）に思わず自覚させられるような、つまり、聞き手に内省を促すような、もっとある意味重い「冷ややかさ」だという気がします。
　このアルバムは、そういう自分の暗い部分を自覚させてしまうのですが、そう自覚した上で、そういう部分が許されていく感覚に包み込まれるような独特な魅力があります。そこがこのアルバムの不思議なところであり、最大の魅力であり、そういうところにリチャードライトの人間味も表現されているのだと思います。作者の、聞き手に対する暖かい眼差しというようなものを強く感じます。穏やかであり、寡黙であり、冷たくもあり、不思議なことに同時に甘味でもある。。。という音であり、そういう人の作った音楽だということかもしれません。

先ごろ、亡くなられたピンクフロイドのキーボーディスト、リチャードライトによる９６年発表のソロアルバムです。フロイドといえば、どうしても、ウォーターズ、ギルモアにばかり目が行きますが、なかなかどうして良いアルバムになっています。
サウンド的には、ギルモア’ｓフロイドの「鬱」「対」に近い浮遊感のある空間を作り出しており、「ザ・ウォール」までのフロイドとは、少し違う感じがし、ウォーターズに、解雇されてしまった理由もわかる気がしてしまいます。
ただ、その浮遊感のあるサウンドが、なかなか、どうして気持ちが良く、聞き応えのあるアルバムに仕上がっています。ギルモアがリーダーとなってからのフロイドサウンドに関心のある方は、一度、聞かれてみてはいかがでしょうか？
