The album feels even more like a collection of singles (instead of an actual movie soundtrack) than Help! or A Hard Day's Night, but maybe that's because every song sounds like it could have been a hit single--with the natural exception of the goofy/weird instrumental "Flying." Even George's "Blue Jay Way" paints a vivid sound-portrait in fascinating detail. (I consider Joni Mitchell's "Car on the Hill" from Court and Spark to be a companion piece about sitting in the Hollywood Hills, waiting for somebody to show up.) And although the goofy TV movie may have been mostly Paul's baby, this album features the two 45 rpm masterpieces that sum up the quintessential best of Lennon and McCartney at this stage of their development: Paul's "Penny Lane" and John's "I Am the Walrus." --Jim Emerson

今のミュージックシーンにおいてはプロモフィルムは当たり前のように作られている。日本のアイドル歌手ですら! それもただ演奏に合わせ口パクするのではなくメンバー以外の出演者も多数登場する本格的なドラマ仕様のものも珍しくないほどだ。ではそれを最初にやったのは誰か? 異論はあろうが、私はビートルズのMMTであると思う。確かにMMTはストーリーも無くかって気ままなバスの旅をフィルムに収めただけの代物だ。でも見方を変えると、ビートルズのプロモフィルム集と考えることはできないだろうか?いや、間違いなくMMTに触発されてプロモフィルムを作ったアーティストはいるはずだ。(M.J?)肝心のアルバムだが、当時のシングルヒット作品も収められたベスト盤的内容でもあり、初めてビートルズのアルバムを聴く人にも違和感なく受け入れられる作品だ。アルバムとしての統一性は微塵もないが、フライング以外は全曲後期ビートルズを代表する名曲と言って差し支えないだろう。

今から20年程前、ビートルズのオリジナルアルバムを全部揃えようとしていた時、最後に買ったのがこのアルバムでした。
当時は情報が今ほど氾濫していなかったので、一般的に寄せ集めアルバムとして見られて評価の低いこのアルバムは一番最後になってしまいました。
しかし、聞いてみてビックリ。シングルのAB面の曲が多いので、楽曲のクオリティーの高さに愕然し、なぜ最初に買わなかったのかと後悔した記憶があります。
トータルコンセプト云々ではなく、ビートルズ初心者が最初に買うアルバムとしては最適ではないかと思われます。近年、テレビ（特にフジ）でいろいろな番組の挿入歌やバックミュージックなどで使われる事の多いビートルズですが、特にこのアルバムの曲は多いので、耳にされた事もあると思います。
後期のアルバムには「サージェントペパー」や「ホワイトアルバム」など、マニア趣向が高い中、「マジカルミステリーツアー」には華あるので入門者はぜひ聞いてみたらいかがですか？

マジカル・ミステリー・ツアーと称された映画（バス旅行）は、ビートルズ初めての失敗（駄作）と言われた。当時、私も奇妙な感じがしてついていけなかったが・・しかし演奏曲は別格であった。いつの時代もイイものは輝きをいつも放っている。このＣＤに収められた名曲（１１曲）に今、また耳を傾けても感動するのだ。ご存知だろうかジョンの歌う「アイ・アム・ザ・ウォルラス」のラストのリズムを「エンヤトット、エンヤトットまつしまあ〜のお〜」とつずく日本民謡なのだ。日本公演に来たとき仕入れたとも言われている。「ストロベリー・フィールズ・フォーエバー」は実に複雑である、いつ聴いてもその不思議さが新鮮である。そうかと思えばポールが歌う「ハロー・グットバイ」のシンプルさ、誰でも作曲できそうだが、それが出来ないのだ。ピカソの子供のような絵なのに真似が出来ないのと同じとは思えないだろうか。シンプルほど意味が深いのだ。・・今回の作品はどんなものでも曲ずくりに取り入れた意欲に満ちたものだ。・・評価が最上級、星５ッでは不十分である。表紙を飾っている星ぐらい捧げたい気持ちである。
