The careful burnishing of John Lennon's daunting legend usually obscures one telling fact: the former Beatle endured a long and troubling artistic slump in the mid-'70s. Indeed, his five-year retirement/househusband phase may have been one of the shrewdest career moves he ever made. Cut in Los Angeles during his prolonged "lost weekend" estrangement from Yoko Ono, Walls and Bridges too often sacrifices the sublime for the ridiculous--that is, when it's not being altogether superfluous. この 心の壁、愛の橋 や ロックンロールを好む人はジョンのファンではちょっと異端的・・・てな評を見かけたことがある。でも個人的には星を１０個あげてもいいくらいの擦り切れ盤。正直なところ歴史的名盤として名高い最初の２枚は数年に一回、聴くか聴かないかの状態でほとんど必要ないが、この盤がないと本当に辛い。寂しさや辛さや悲しみがサラりと心に入ってくるストレートさは他では得難い魅力であり、もはやジョン・レノンを意識することなく一つの特効薬のような存在になっている。混乱の次期にやっつけ仕事でつくられたアルバムなのにこのクオリティの高さは何なのであろう？やはり天才っていうのは人と違うのでしょうね。(当たり前か) ジョンの作品で生前では唯一、Ｎｏ．１ヒットとなったエルトン・ジョンとの共作、真夜中をつっ走れ、暑い夏の日の情景が思い浮かぶかのような美しい曲、枯れた道、これまた美しいタイトル通りの、夢の夢、そして個人的には必殺の曲で一番大好きな、予期せぬ驚き、など楽曲のクオリティの高さは驚異的。ジョン・レノンという名前を超えて末永く付き合える友人のようなアルバムです。

前作「MIND GAMES」が硬調でクールなイメージだったのに対し、「WALLS AND BRIDGES」はエルトン・ジョンを迎えたり,アルバム・ジャケットにジョンが子供の頃に描いた絵をあしらったりして､アルバム全体のイメージは明るい。曲でいえば「Whatever Gets You Thru the Night」や「#9 Dream」などはその代表曲といえよう。ただ、アルバム全体のイメージは明るいが、収録された曲をつぶさに見てみると、ジョンならではの凄まじいばかりの心象スケッチといえる曲が多い。「Going Down on Love」や「Old Dirt Road」の淡々としたさびしさ。また、どちらもジョンの心の叫びといえようが、「WHAT YOU GOT」や「Scared」は曲調の違い、画家にしてみればタッチの違いが面白い。とくに＃４はジョンの力強いボーカルが聞かれ、やっぱりジョンのオーライト（all right!）という合いの手を聞かないとね、という向きには感涙物の一曲だ。しかし何といってもアルバムの山と思えるのが「Steel and Glass」と「Nobody Loves You」の２曲。＃９はアラン・クラインを歌ったものとのことだが、都会に住む者の孤独や不安定な精神を見事に暗喩することに成功している。＃１１はサビをリフレインせず一度で決め、厳しくも美しい一曲だ。

~ジョン・レノンのアルバムにはある法則があります。アルバム全体を象徴する曲をトップに持ってきて、それをシングルカットするというものです。『ジョンの魂』から『ダブル・ファンタジー』までそれは一貫しています。唯一その法則から外れているのがこのアルバムです（『ロックン・ロール』はカバーアルバムですから除きます）。このアルバム制作時にジョン~~はヨーコと別居していました。ヨーコがジョンを突き放して、代わりの女性もあてがったようですが、ヨーコという精神的な支えを失ってジョンの落ち込みかたは激しく、ハリー・ニルソン、キース・ムーンらと酒ばかり飲んでいたようです。曲作りにもその影響は表れています。アルバムには、そこそこの曲が並んでいるけれども、先ほど言った、アルバムを象徴する~~ような曲は書けていない。エルトン・ジョンとのデュエット曲はなぜか全米No.1になりますが、この曲とてアルバムを象徴するような曲ではない。本当は落ち込んでいて調子が悪いのに、そんな自分の姿をジョンはあらわにすることができない。オーケストラの分厚いサウンドで曲を包んで、奥にジョンは隠れてしまっている。死後発表された『メンラブ・アベニュー』B面~~でこのアルバムの曲の初期のバージョンを聴くことができますが、まだ加工されていないぶん、傷口がひりひりするような感じで、胸にじんと来ます。「Yoko」が歌詞に出てこないのも本作だけです。~
