They still had plenty of covers to fill out the running time, but the Lennon-McCartney writing team was gathering steam and beginning to knock out pop classics as if they were pulling them out of thin air. "All My Loving" and "I Wanna Be your Man" come from this record, issued hurriedly to capitalise on Beatlemania. But even when they were laying into some classic Chuck Berry, by this time the Beatles had acquired a unique sound in the blend of John's and Paul's voices, while George was coming on by leaps and bounds as a guitar player. ビートルズはアルバムとシングルは別物という考えでした。マネージャーのブライアンエプスタインの戦略だったのかもしれませんが、次のアルバムの予告編としてシングルを扱っていたのです。ゆえに本作には同時期のメガヒット曲だった抱きしめたいやシーラヴズユーは当然収録されていません。またこのアルバムからシングルカットされた曲も当時はありませんでした。しかしながらカットすれば大ヒットしたであろう#3を筆頭に優れた曲が多いのも事実です。特に世界一のビートルズファンを名乗るジョンのリードヴォーカル曲である#2,#7,#13の3曲は聴くたびに胸がきゅんとなる一押しの曲です。また#3を聴くたびにビートルズって本当にいい曲を作るんだなぁーと感嘆してしまいます。ビートルズの魅力に取りつかれ始めたあなたにぜひ聴いていただきたい一枚です。

ビートルズの原点は何といってもロックンロール。
「プリーズ・プリーズ・ミー」に続く、このセカンドアルバムは、ビートルズの音楽的故郷とも言えるロックンロールで全篇が構成されている。

オリジナルの「オール・マイ・ラヴィング」などと共に彼らが愛した「プリーズ・ミスター・ポストマン」「ロール・オーバー・ベートヴェン」「マネー」などが納められている。
カバー曲と言えども、オリジナル曲のように聞こえるほどビートルズ・サウンドに仕上げられている。
ビートルズのヴァージョンで知っている人も多いのでは。

デビュー前に、キャバーン等でのレパートリー曲で、彼らの演奏やコーラスのセンスの良さに驚くばかり。
ジャケットのハーフ・シャドウの４人の顔も若々しく、これから全世界を席巻するエネルギーが詰まったアルバム。

ビートルズのアルバムの中でも、「一緒に歌いたくなる度」の高さはこの作品が一番じゃないでしょうか！？
のっけの「イットウォントビーロング」なんてコーラスとの掛け合いも含めてひとりで鼻歌しちゃうし、とにかくオリジナルもカバーも全曲素晴らしい！5つ星でも足りないくらい。

ビートルズは今やモーツァルトやベートーベンらと並べて語られるくらいに「古典として」評価されていますが、それでも古典や伝説に収まってしまわずにいつまでも瑞々しいのは、「一緒に歌ってしまう！」高揚感が常に聞き手を揺さぶり続けているからではないでしょうか。
