Bob Seger has racked up a lot of worthy tracks over the years, but it took until 1994 for a greatest hits package to appear. Voil The bad news: We're missing an awful lot of songs here. Night Moves is Seger's crit-pick album, and a great place to start if you don't have any Seger at all. Next in the rankings is Stranger in Town. Otherwise, his highs are pretty scattered, which would make any best-of package a worthy investment. But if you want to get comprehensive, "Rock & Roll Never Forgets", "Fire Down Below", "Horizontal Bop", "Her Strut", "Betty Lou's Getting Out Tonight", and "Katmandu" aren't on this CD--and you'll have to go to the original albums to secure them. --Gavin McNett

ブルース・スプリングスティーン「Greatest Hits」、ジャクソン・ブラウン「The Next Voice You Hear」といったベスト盤と共に、「これなら出さない方が良かったじゃん」的ベストとして私の中では認識しております（＾＾；。

「ボブ・シーガーを初めて聴いてみよう」という方がこのベスト盤に手を出すのかと思うと歯がゆくてなりません。
これを買うなら「ライブ・ブレット」か「嵐を呼ぶ声」を先に聴いて欲しいです。

選曲も曲順も脈絡がなく、新曲が２曲含まれているということしか魅力がありません。

ベスト盤の選曲には賛否両論がつきもので、キリがないのは判りますが、ブルース・スプリングスティーンしかり、ジャクソン・ブラウンしかり、そのキャリアにおいて「シングル・ヒット」より「アルバム」に重点を置くファンが大半をしめる、こういったアーティストのベストというのは、CDとはいえ、１枚にまとめるのはいくらなんでも酷でしょう。

たぶん、リアル・タイムで追い掛けていたファンが待っていたのは、こういうベスト盤ではなく、トム・ペティの「Playback」のようなボックス・セットが先だったのではないかと思います。

仕方ないので「アーバン・カウボーイ」のCD買います…　ついでに「ビバリー・ヒルズ・コップ２」「ティーチャーズ」「きのうの夜は…」「ロードハウス」........

このアルバムは、アメリカでは今でもビルボードのトップ・ポップ・カタログ部門のトップ２０に入っており、
累計７００万枚を超え、根強い人気の国民的スターの一人です。

このベストの特徴は、彼の長いキャリアにおける、音作りの変遷がわかること。
'７０年代の名作「Stranger in Town」を頂点とした、左右のギターリフで曲の土台を作り、ピアノ・オルガンは後ろに引いている音作りから、
'８０年の「Against the Wind」以降の、ギターリフによる曲が減り、ピアノ・オルガン、コーラスなどが前面に出ることが多くなっていく姿が捉えられています。
ピアノでは、ブルースのＥストリートバンドのロイ・ビタン、リトル・フィートの奇才ビル・ペインが、１･４･５･１１･１２で輝いています。
５は「Stranger in Town」の曲。ビルがかなり弾き込んでいますが、音像が狭いのが残念。
でも、後期でもギターにワデイー・ワクテルを招いたりして、決してロック＆ロールの基本ははずしていません。
オーソドックスでストレートなバンドのロックと、よく練られたアレンジの完成度の高いロックとが、バランスよく並んでいます。

また、ボブや仲間が子供達と撮ったスナップ写真や、関係してきたミュージシャンとの関わった年数を列記したりと、
音とは逆に内省的な歌詞が多い彼の繊細さや優しさが、アルバム全体にあふれています。
