このアルバム、ここのレビューに関らず酷評されています｡たぶんロックの歴史を俯瞰してみると、彼らのここでのアプローチに斬新なものがなかったってことなんでしょう。
しかしカバーの原曲を聴いたことがなかった僕はリリース当時かなりのインパクトを受けました。ロックの旨みを始めて感じたアルバムかもしれない。この評価は、デュランデュランにではなく、カバーもとのロックの遺産に対してなされるべきものなのかもしれない。そういう意味で一般的な評価のされ方は間違いないと言えるでしょう。
ただ、新しい世代の人はしかめっ面してこのアルバムを批判しなくてもいいんじゃないかというのが僕のスタンスです。このアルバムを聴いてかっこいいと感じたなら、この旨みを食い尽くしてから過去の遺産を辿るのもありかと。難しい顔していきなり昔のアルバム聴いたら、ミックスの悪さが引っかかったり、ファッションがNGで受けつけなかったりで、逆に遠回りになることもあるのです。
音楽聴く時は自分の感覚を信じて、「今」気持ち良いと思うものをききましょう♪

前作「ウェディング・アルバム」である意味復活したDURAN　DURANの新譜はなんと全曲カバーアルバム。それ自体は特に驚くものではないが、驚くのはその楽曲センスと演奏である。デビューから知ってるDURAN　DURANはこう言っちゃなんだが女の子向けのポップであったと思うのだが、ここで聴けるのはまさにロックそのもの。カバーした元アーチストに付いては欄外で書いてあるので割愛するが、とにかく私のようなバリバリのハードロック、ヘヴィーメタルファンも納得の一枚。　８０年代は忘れて（これもみんなイイ曲だから聴いて欲しいが）とにかく聴いて欲しい。　なんかライブに行きたくなる、そんな一枚です。

８０年代、第２次ブリティッシュ・インベイションの立役者となった彼らの人気も相次ぐメンバーの脱退などから低迷を辿っていた（因みに第１次はビートルズ、ストーンズの時代の話）。ビジュアル先行に思われがちな彼らではあるが、コンスタントに一定水準以上の作品をリリースしており、通算７作目にあたる「the wedding album」に収録された「ordinary world」のヒットにより再びメインストリームに返り咲いた。

本作はその「the wedding album」に続いてリリースされたもので、全曲、彼らが影響を受けたバンドのカバーとなっている。収録された楽曲は彼らの直系のルーツにあたるルー・リードやイギーポップなどのグラム・ロックから、果てはグランドマスターフラッシュ、パブリック・エネミーといったヒップホップにまで及んでおりヨーロッパ的な耽美主義とダンス・ビートの融合に腐心してきた彼ららしい選曲となっている。

こうしたカバーアルバムにおいては、如何に歴史的に評価が定まっている楽曲を自身の懐に手繰り寄せることができるかが出来、不出来の境界となるが、本作は見事に全曲DURAN DURANのサウンドとして提示されている。

なかでもタイトル・トラックとなっているレッドツェッペリンの「Thank You」はほとんど弾き語りに近い原曲から、スケール感のあるロック・バラードに再構築されており、最早、彼らの楽曲に近い水準にまで高められている。

結局、本作はヒット作とはなり得ず、彼らの人気も再び低迷していくこととなるが、それは決して作品の質によるものではなかったと思っている。60,70年代のロックミュージシャンが伝説として、時代が過ぎ去ったあとも語り継がれるのと較べれば、80年代に活躍したミュージシャンはどこか気恥ずかしいものとして思い起こされるふしがあるが、サウンド面においては70年代のエッセンスと同様に80年代のサウンドも現役世代によって再現される動きが出てきている。名前は先人ほど大きく残らずともロックを前進させた意味では先人同様に評価できるものだと思う。
