ワイアットが抜けた1972年リリースの5作目。Side oneはフィル・ハワードが、Side twoは
ジョン・マーシャルが叩いてます。

全7曲の内4曲をラトリッジのオリジナルが占めてます。「All White」、「Drop」、「As If」
、「Pigling Bland」とどれも彼らしいクールかつエキセントリックな内容で演奏の緊張感も
すばらしいですね。ただ惜しいのは前半2曲はフィル・ハワードが叩いてるんですが、彼は
やはりジョン・マーシャルと比べるとさすがに役者不足で、コチラもマーシャルが叩いてた
らなぁーと思うのも事実だ。
ただ曲の出来は申し分ない。滴の効果音を入れ、後は永遠ラトリッジのオルガンが唸りまくる
「Drop」。まさにフリー・ジャズでゲスト参加してるロイ・バビントンのこの世のものとは
思えないダブルベースの弓弾きが堪能できる「As If」。シンプルなテーマを繰り返すだけな
のにインプロヴィゼーション要素を高めることによっていつ聴いても飽きない「Pigling Blan
d」と実に多彩。

ヒュー・ホッパー作の「M.C.」やエルトン・ディーン作の「Bone」も中々面白いが、ちょっと
「狙いすぎ」かなぁーって感じも否めない。

「LBO」はジョン・マーシャルのドラムソロが2分間愉しめます。実に幸せ。

個人的には前作よりパワーアップしたこの路線は大好きですね。

ワイアット脱退後の新ドラマーにフィル・ハワード（キース・ティペット・グループ）、ジョン・マーシャル（キース・ティペット・グループ、ニュークリアス）が順に加入し、片面ずつを担当。管楽器奏者はエルトン・ディーンのみになり、これまで以上に彼のサックスが前面に押し出されている。特に前半はハワードのきめ細やかなシンバル・ワークを特徴とするジャズ的なプレイとも相まってグループ史上もっともジャズに接近した内容になっている。同時期に発表されたディーンのソロ作「ジャスト・アス」に近い感触もあるが、決してフリー一辺倒に流れることはない。グループらしいクールネスと整合感を生み出しているのはあくまでラトリッジ＆ホッパーの存在である。
緊張と弛緩、シャープな演奏と幻惑的な雰囲気が見事に調和したこの時期のグループが志向したフリージャズ路線の到達点だろう

音楽の進化はとどまるとこを知らない。
極限までジャズとロックの可能性を追求した第５作！
エルトン・ディーン在籍、最後の作品。

ここにきて完全なジャズロックに変貌しまったソフツ
よりコンパクトにソリッドな音になった感じ。
なかでもラドリッジのオルガンとディーンのエレピが
からむ2が印象的！
