このアルバムを話し始めると、超名曲1から先になかなか進めない。

何度聞いてもグッとくるイントロは、フレットレス感覚のＢが隠し味、
歌のウラではスライドＧがスローに空を駈け、スネアのエコーは思いっきり後ノリで引っ張り、ピアノはヘビーにホンキートンク。
極めつけは左にぶっといアナログシンセ、右にはジョーでなければ出せない独特の質感のトーキングモジュレーターＧソロ、
そしてたたみかけるように再びスライドＧで一気にエンディングへ。

とにかく、楽器をやってる者なら「どのパートでもいいから演らせてくれ~」と叫びたくなる曲です。
いかにもライブ向きのようですが、ソロやイーグルスでのライブに比べ、実はこのスタジオテイクが最もドライブ感がある、ホントに不思議な曲（＆演奏）。
「オンナは”その話は哀しいと言って泣く”からいらない」という歌詞、意味不明だけど、妙にハマってる。

さて、そろそろ終えないといけませんが、もう１曲、隠れた名曲６「Meadows」。
このイントロは、プロデュースのビルの発案で１６トラックレコーダーをバンドメンバー、ビルはじめエンジニア達に１トラックずつを与えて、
好きなように録音したものを使うことにしたそうな。
でも、結局ジョーしか録音してなくて（ビルのジョーク？）、曲の内容に全く関係のないイントロの出来上がり。でもこれがまた名曲。
・・・ホント、ジョーらしいよなあ・・・。

イーグルスのひょうきん担当のジョーさん、73年のソロ２作目にして初ブレーク作品です。あーゆう人柄ですから内容はばか満載かと思えばさにあらず、実にしっとりした味わい深いもの。喜劇は悲劇なりと言いますがこの人繊細なものやると実に良いんです。ジェイムス・ギャング時代の豪快ハードロックから一変したこのある意味地味なアルバムをしっかり受け止めた当時のアメリカはさすが。けっして今の音楽状況では聴けない種類の音楽です。イーグルスでは彼の力の半分も出してないだろうなあ。

ジェームス・ギャング脱退後、「ホテル・カリフォルニア」から加入するイーグルス以前のジョー・ウォルシュのソロ。この人のきらめくばかりの才能は、もっと現在でも注目されていいはずだ。

まずは、このアルバムを聴いてほしい。ジェームス・ギャングのようなアーシーなハードロックやホテル・カリフォルニアでのイーグルスのような美しいメロディー。そのエッセンスが詰まっている。

更に驚くべきはその多様性。キーボードやエフェクトが耳障りにならない程度に施されていて、単なるメロディアスなロックンロールになっていない。この控えめなバランス感覚のすばらしいこと！
