   美しいメロディ<3><6>などの小品的な曲がメインだが、サイケデリックなのに解放感あふれる<1>も最高。（麻路 稔）

The Who Sell Out's pirate-radio concept goes south in the album's second half--the Who ran out of time before they could write enough faux commercials--but it still remains in many ways their best and most entertaining album. Pete Townshend and John Entwistle supply song after great song, and along with Keith Moon play them with power and focus. The classic single "I Can See for Miles" is matched on at least a handful of tracks, including the opening psychedelic-pop blast of "Armenia City in the Sky" (written by Townshend pal Speedy Keen), the hilarious social-interaction tales "Odorono" and "Tattoo," and the majestic mini-opus "Rael." This remaster's bonus tracks are occasionally too much of a good thing, but the Tommy rough draft "Glow Girl" is brilliant. --Rickey Wright

このアルバムは　古いロックアルバムの中では頻繁に聞きます。ラジオ感覚で聞き流せる気楽なアルバムです。コンセプトはラジオロンドンという架空の海賊放送です。このころピートは
実際の商品をアルバムで宣伝して　アルバムの売り上げと商品を扱う広告代理店からと二重に
収入を得ようと考えていたそうです。何しろザフーの目的は、短期間で出来るだけたくさん稼ぐ？だったらしいですから！　でコカ・コーラの宣伝の話を代理店に持ち込んだけど　報酬は
コーラ１ケースと聴いて、彼らの扱う媒体の多さに驚いたなんていうインタビューを思い出します。ともあれ　プレミアドラムス（キースの使用ドラムメーカー）やハインズのビーンズなど実際の商品の歌もあります。後半のエデションは　トミーとライブアットリーズの間に発売されるはずだったお蔵入りアルバムの音源です。音質や演奏がいまいちだったりするものもありますが、ファンなら海賊版で多数出回っていた音源なのでおなじみの曲ばかりです。60年代のイギリスの空気を感じさせる好アルバムです。

日本独自企画の紙ジャケ･シリーズの１枚。68年にリリースされた日本盤ＬＰの激レア･ジャケでの復刻です（コーティング･シングル･ジャケット）。特筆すべきは全曲モノラルで収録されていることでしょう（世界初ＣＤ化）。本作のモノは当時のＬＰモノ盤が廃盤になって以来聴けなかったもので、約40年近くぶりの再発ということになります。特に「Odorono」「Our Love Was」の２曲はステレオとはギター･パートに大きな違いがあることはマニアには知られていますが、ここに公式にＣＤ化されたことは日本ユニヴァーサルに感謝するしかありません。本盤はオリジナル･モノ･マスターからジョン･アストリーがリマスリングを担当しており、音質も文句なし。ステレオ･リミックス盤よりオリジナルＬＰに近づいたと思われるこのモノ盤の「音」は、新たな感激を与えてくれるでしょう。ザ･フー･ファンは必聴。

最初の発売から約40年ぶりに日本でのオリジナル盤が再発されました。
発売日本グラモフォン、SLPM-1394、価格は1750円、I Can See For Milesを除いて、Stereo仕様で発売されました。
今回のCD盤は、復刻盤として完成度は高く、歌詞カードも当時のままの仕様で封入されています。もちろんジャケも当時のままです。
しかし残念ながら、mono音源のみの収録でstereo音源が収録されていません。
鳥類の「刷り込み」現象ではないのですが、当時からのフアンとしては、一番最初に聞いた音源が全てであり、mono音源には違和感を感じます。その意味で、stereoとmonoの両方が収録されていたらパーフェクトだったですね。
これに関して最近の傾向に付いて、古い音源のリマスターは許せますが、リミックスは反対ですね。当時の空気・ミュージシャンの感性・プロデューサーの感性を大切にしたいですね。
曲目に付いては、オリジナルの13曲のみが収録されています（オリジナル盤は14曲表示）、購入時には注意してください。
