   ボブ・ジェームス、リー・リトナー、ネーザン・イースト、ハーヴィ・メイソンは、1990年にボブのアルバム『Grand Piano Canyon』のレコーディングではじめて全員顔を揃えた。意気投合した4人は翌91年にフォープレイを結成。同年発表したデビュー作はビルボードのコンテンポラリー・ジャズ・チャートの1位にランクされ、たちまち人気バンドとなった。
   これは97年に発表したベスト盤で、初期の3作(『フォープレイ』『ビトゥイーン・ザ・シーツ』『エリクシール』)からピックアップしたナンバーに新曲<3><4>を追加した内容。スティーヴィー・ワンダー73年のヒット曲<3>はTAKE 6のコーラスをフィーチャーしヴォーカル仕立て。<4>はリー・リトナーのオリジナル。なおフィル・コリンズの歌をフィーチャーした<12>は『エリクシール』に収録されていたバージョンとは違い、ここに聴かれるのはリミックス・バージョン。ともかく、フォープレイならではのエレガントなフュージョンが満喫できる作品だ。（市川正二）

オーディオ屋さんのサンプルで掛かっているのを聴いて購入しました。
私自身フュージョンに疎いのですが、演奏技術、曲の完成度、音質の高さに驚かされました。聴くたびに感動を覚えます。
ファンの方にとってはとても不本意な言い方かもしれませんが、音楽に暗い方であってもＢＧＭ用として持っておくべき１枚だと思います。どんな状況でも邪魔にならないシックな音楽です。

フュージョン・ファンには絶対お勧めのアルバム。２曲目の「101・イーストバウンド」は、ＮＨＫ・ＦＭの「ミッドナイトポップライブラリー」のテーマ曲としてもすっかり有名になった。アコースティックの美しいメロディーは、深夜皆が寝静まった頃、ワイングラスを片手に、忙しかった一日をゆっくりと振り返るのにはピッタリ。ボブの奏でるキーボードの音色には、いつもながら‘うっとり’させられる。でもそれ以上に、フュージョン界のトッププレーヤー4人の調和の取れたサウンドが、何とも言えない心地よさになっているのだと思う。

フォー･プレイって、フュージョン系の大物ミュージシャンを集めて、それなりの曲をそれなりに演奏してオシマイみたいなコンセプトが安易に思えて、まともに聴こうという気が起こりませんでした。いわゆる聴かず嫌いというやつですか。
先日たまたまライブ映像を見て、ふと思いました。ボブ･ジェームスって本気でこういうことをやりたかったんじゃないかと。
基本的なフォーマットはジャズ･コンボ、ピアノ･カルテットですよね。そういえば、ボブ･ジェームスは元々ピアニストでした。デビュー･アルバムは「ボールド･コンセプション｣という前衛的なピアノ･アルバムです。ここでボブは真剣にピアノをプレイしています。
マルチ･トラック使いまくりのフュージョンの後、シンプルなコンボ編成でフュージョンを演奏するというのは、ある意味興味深いものがあります。
バンド･マスター出身のデイブ･グルーシンには出来ないことかもしれません。
