デビュー・アルバム『ソングス・アバウト・ジェーン』が大ヒット中のマルーン5。その勢いはとどまることを知らず，等々ビルボード・チャートに50週も居座り続けてしまった。しかし，そんな順風満帆な活動の裏には苦節の時があったりする。それはマルーン5を結成する以前に，組んでいたカラーズ・フラワーズ時代。97年に発表した本作は，ビルボードにチャートインすら出来なかったのだ。その理由はわからないが，作品の質だけ取れば，“なぜそこまで無視されたのか”と首を傾げたくなるくらい高いクオリティは誇っている。特に聴きやすさにこだわり抜いた楽曲は一級品。初期ビートルズを彷彿させる甘酸っぱいメロディ，コーラス・ワークとザ・フー，ザ・ジャムが乗り移ったかのような縦乗りビートが交じり合ったサウンドは，この上ないほどの爽快感を味あわせてくれる。マルーン5でのファンク，R&Bテイストの裏で滲み出る耳通りの良いメロディは，カラーズ・フラワーズで育まれたと言えるのではないだろうか。さらにはバンドの演奏力。ギターのトーンを楽曲のワビサビで細かく変化させたり，ドラムの手数が異様に多かったりして，小技を利かせているところがニクイ。マルーン5で表現するシンコペ連続の激テクぶりもすでにこの頃から身に付いていたようだ。

マルーン５は最高なバンドだ。世界中でデビューアルバムが記録的なヒットを作り続けている。
さて、もともと現在のマルーン５が活躍する前は、ボーカルのアダムとギターのジェッシーなどが結成してたバンドがKara'sである。そのカラーズかなりロックしています。
1、2、12（日本限定ボーナストラック異では）等の曲では、ベースライン、ギターのカッティング、ドラムのリズムと50年代60年代のあのロックを思い起こさせる。また、マルーン５の音ができ始める一歩手前の彼らの音も聞ける。
完全にこのアルバムがマルーン５のアルバムとかぶるわけではない。このアルバムにＲ＆Ｂの要素が十分に生かされたのが、マルーン５のデビューアルバムである。
オススメナンバーは、1、3マルーン５系、7アコースティックギターのイントロが美しい。タル・バックマンが好きな人はこの曲は最高に受けると思います。10、独特なリズムが最高です。11一番のお気に入りです。ベースラインが美しい。ボーカルも最高です。
このアルバムはマルーン５ではなかなか聞けなかったアコースティックの曲が魅力を発揮しているアルバムといっていいかもしれません。
１９９７年の出されたこのアルバム。９０年の要素は完璧に詰まっています。９０年ロックが好きな方に是非オススメです。

こいつらあのプッシュキングスのライバルだな。それだけの知性とサウンド構成力をしたたかに持ち合わせている。すごい。ニートな音の感触。めりはりのあるギタープレーなど、魅力は多い。これからパワーポップをひっぱっていく力になり得る本当にクレヴァーなバンドの登場である。プッシュキングスが好きなら完全におすすめです。いろんなタイプの曲があるんで、なんか世界を旅行してるみたいです。
