New Adventures, despite its studiocentric title, is a snapshots-from-the-road record in the tradition of Neil Young's Time Fades Away and Jackson Browne's Running on Empty. Like them, it captures a where-am-I-and-why ambience, even with its concert and sound-check material reworked in post-tour sessions. This is very much a transitional album, its feel somewhere between the chamber-folk sweep of Out of Time and Automatic for the People and the distortion-pedal party that raged on Monster. 発売時には、オートマチックとモンスターの良いとこ取りなんて言われていたのだけれども、そんなことはなくて、二作に比べると迷走気味な印象を受けます。ただ最後の　Electrolite　が、その後に彼らが行き着いたリヴィールの中のどの曲よりも素晴らしく思えてしまうのは、このアルバム全体に流れる、あてどない旅のような感傷的な雰囲気のせいではないかと訝ってしまう。

このアルバムを初めて聴いたのはたしか高2の夏。J-POPに飽き飽きして洋楽を少しずつ試していた。お金もないのでレンタルで借りて、#6"leave"の超へヴィーなギターに打ちのめされた。さて、このアルバムといえばやっぱりパティ・スミスとの共演の#5"e-bow the letter"なのだろうか。僕はこの曲も好きだけど、"leave"とあと#12"so fast, so numb"も好きだ。"so fast, so numb"はあまり注目は浴びないけれど、R.E.M的な「強さ」が全面に出た素晴らしい曲だと思う。あの高2の夏もからもうかなり経つ。"automatic for the people"と一緒にモノクロのジャケットがお気に入り。

１９９６年にリリースされた１０枚目のアルバムです。前作でのダイナミックなロック・サウンドから一気にトーン・ダウン、ダウナーなアコースティック・チューンを中心とした作品で、やっぱり反動が来てしまったか、という感じかも。前作にちょっとカラ元気的なサウンドを感じた僕としては、危惧していた状況が来てしまったという感じでした。前作で久々に再開した過酷なツアーの中で作られたというMichaelの歌詞には「Moving」「Travel」といった言葉が多く、一種ロード・ムーヴィー的な作品と言えなくも無いですが、気になるのは、バンドがとこかへ行っててしまうのではないか、という焦燥感が感じられる事でした。ジャジーなピアノをフューチャーし、ダウン・テンポの曲を中心としたサウンドは、ツアーで疲れ!た彼ら自身への癒しのような意味あいもありそうな気がします。Patti Smithをゲストに招いたレイド・バックしたバラード、マイナー・キーを多用したダウナーなサウンドには、それに隠された光のようなものが僕には見えなくて、とにかくこの空気を共有することと、バンドが消え入る事の無いことを祈ることしか出来ませんでした。ただ、味わい深い作品だと言うことは確かで、間違いなくこの時の彼らのベストな選択であったことは疑いようもないですが。
