1995年3月13日から4月3日ニューヨーク、パワー・ステーションで録音。メルドーのデビュー作。
ブラッド・メルドーは1970年8月23日生まれ、ドイツ人眼科医の養子として養女の姉とともに育つ。『The Art Of Trio』のホルヘ・ロッシィ、ラリー・グレナディアとの出会いはニュー・スクール時代に遡る。その才能に最初に気がついたのは母、そしてマット・ピアソン(ワーナー・ブラザース)だった。24才だったブラッド・メルドーはワーナーとの契約の時に一つだけ条件を出した。『アーティストとしての自分に忠実であることを何よりも大切にしたい、それを理解してもらいたい』である。そして本作のプロデュースも当然マット・ピアソンである。
面白いのは前半1-5が『The Art Of Trio』の面子、後半6-9ではクリスティアン・マックブライド(b)、ブライアン・ブライド(ds)と組み合わせてレコーディングしている点である。僕にはピアソンがメルドーが最高のピアノ・トリオがやれるのは誰か試行したような感触を受ける。そしてその結論がニュー・スクール時代からのつきあいである『The Art Of Trio』だったということではないだろうか。
曲は9曲中4.5.7.9がメルドーのオリジナル。残りがスタンダード・ナンバーで固められている。マット・ピアソンには現代に蘇るビル・エバンス・トリオ(ビル・エバンス(p)・スコット・ラファロ(b)・ポール・モチアン(ds)の!)があるのか『My Romance』も収められていて素晴らしい演奏である。僕はこの演奏が一番気に入った。
デビュー作とは信じ難いほど高いレベルの作品である。天才とはそういうものなのだろう。

Brad Mehldauのワーナー･ブラザースへの第一作であり，25歳当時からかなり成熟したタッチを示している。アルバムを通して，伝統的なピアノ･トリオ形式での演奏が展開されるが，(1)~(5)は現在もレギュラーでの活動を継続するLarry Grenadier(b)，Jorge Rossy(ds)，(6)~(9)がChristian McBride(b)，Brian Blade(ds)との2組のセッティングを収めている。ここでは，McBrideの典型的な4ビート伴奏よりも，より自由度の高いGrenadierの方が，Bradとの演奏の相性としては勝っており，前半5曲の方が聴き応えがある。いずれにしても新人のデビュー作としては水準をはるかに越える出来を示した佳作であり，その後のブレークを十分予感させる。

20代の若者がソロでメジャーレーベルからデビューする．さあこいつのプレイを聴いてくれ．そういうスタンスでできたアルバムであることが，タイトルからもうかがえるわけだが，それは同時に，どんなに優れたアーティストでも，売り出すにはそれなりの作戦が必要なことを意味している．Matt Piersonはそれを十分承知していただろうし，Brad Mehldau本人も，自分のアピールをどうするかを熟慮したはずだ．でなければ，こういう選曲にはならないだろう．

1，2，3，9などの「いかにも」な曲を取り上げるところに「ネタ」感がただようが，そこにはそれでも俺の演奏はちょっと違うぜ，ってな自信が反映されているのだろうし，それを示すのに成功しているのは聴いてみるとわかる．特に，3の"My romance"のイントロは美しい．泣けた．そして，その美しさを形づくっているものの中には，ある意味あのBill Evansと通じるかもしれないダークさがある．そしてそれは，これまでの彼の作品に共通してあるものだ．さあ俺は世界に羽ばたくんだ，ってな新人のういういしさのかけらもないところが素晴らしい．

小さな空間で演奏されているかのような，比較的デッドな録音と，意識的にローを切っているのではないかと思われるピアノの軽い音色が印象的．そのぶんLarry Grenadierのベースの音がよく聴こえるわけだが．ジャケットのイメージとよく合っている．

彼のプレイの素晴らしさは十分に堪能できる．それでよければいいけれど，本作はあくまで「顔見せ」だ．作品性はそんなに高くない．彼のアーティストとしての本質を感じるには，"The art of the trio"シリーズ以降を聴く必要があろうかと思う．
