レジェンド又はゴッドファーザーという肩書きはここから始るという、物凄い一枚。オリジナル3曲（１，３，６）、クラシックアダプテーション２曲（２，４）そしてポップソング（５）という構成で、スムースジャズ（２、４）、アシッドジャズ（３、６）、クラブジャズ（１、４）と90年代ジャズのオリジナルが全てつまった傑作アルバム（これが１９７４年だとは！）。全曲すばらしいが、特に４のグルーヴ、５のスムースネスは永遠のクラシックでしょう。

このアルバムが発売された1974年当時、ボブ・ジェームスの音楽は、ジャズではなくクロスオーバーというジャンルの中に入れられていました。フュージョンというジャンルがまだ一般的でなかった頃です。ジャズとロックとクラシックを融合したようなサウンドは大変斬新で、聞きやすさも相俟ってこのＣＴＩから発売されたアルバムのセールスも好調でした。ボブ・ジェームスの音楽の原点ですので、彼の他のアーティストにない個性がいたる所に表出しています。

ここに収録されているムソルグスキーの「はげ山の一夜」を聴いた時は、衝撃を受けました。原曲の持つ荒荒しさがブラスの咆哮によって増大され、ジャジーなリズムと、各プレイヤーのアド・リヴによって圧倒的な躍動感をもたらしてくれました。聴き終えた時の爽快感はまた格別です。ボブ・ジェームスの名を知った切っ掛けになった曲で、クロスオーバーを代表する演奏と言えましょう。

2曲目の「In the Garden」は、バロックの名曲パッヘルベルのカノンをアレンジしたものです。ジャジーなハーモニカが旋律を奏で、ストリングスがハーモニーを受け持っています。3分程度の演奏ですので、変奏のバリエーションは多くないのが残念です。ＬＰ規格時代ですので仕方ありませんが・・・・。良い演奏だと思います。

5曲目はロバータ・フラックの歌唱でヒットした「愛のためいき」です。まさしくフュージョン系サウンドで、今聴いても古さを全く感じさせない軽やかで親しみやすい曲です。
これから以降の彼のサウンドを彷彿とするような原点とも言うべき作品となっています。

４曲目が昔、プロレスのヒール軍団の入場曲に使われていました。
原曲はクラシックだそうですが、タイトル名にピッタリで何とも言えない不気味さがハマります。
アルバム全体としてもだいぶ昔の作品であるにもかかわらず決して古臭さを感じさせず、それどころか鮮烈なセンスの良さを感じました。
