間違いなく、断固としてマイク・オールドフィールドの音楽が聴ける。「アイランズ」を代表とする中期作品からの連続性がちゃんとあって「なるほどあれがこうなるか」とか。もし初期三部作（もしくは「呪文」までの四作）の印象だけ求めたら違和感を覚えるのかなとも思ったが、それでも「オマドーン」にだってこういうテイストがきちんと入ってたわけで。「マイク＝生楽器にこだわる孤高の職人」みたいなのはすでに遥か昔の終わったイメージだし、もともと積極的にテクノロジーを取り入れる音楽家であることを思えば、とても素直に聴ける。というか余計な予備知識がないほうが楽しめるということか。

先にクラークの小説「遥かなる地球の歌」を読んでいてこのアルバムを聴いたのだが、あの長編をよくまとめあげたものだと感心した。冒頭から「おお、これだ」と思わせ盛り上がりつつ、静かに進行、一種宗教的な崇高感とともに幕を閉じる。音楽にあわせて小説の一場面一場面が浮かぶ喚起力、きちんと原作どおりストーリーを展開する構成も見事。原作を読まずとも楽しめるとは思うが、原作好きなら遥かにひたれるだろう。この音色が単なる環境音楽のお約束というわけではなく、クラークが愛した「三つのS」をちゃんと伝えるものだとよくわかるはず。アルバムだけ聴いてるという人もぜひ原作読むことをお勧めする。

間口が広く奥行きが深い。リラックスしたり没入したりとさまざまに楽しめる充実した傑作。星五つ。

ちょっと違うマイクが大好きです。
マイク・オールドフィールドといえばプログレでアグレッシブ?
でも、このアルバムA.C.クラークのSFを下敷きに素晴らしいストーリー・ミュジックに仕上げているのですが。いままでのマイクの曲を聴いた人には評価が分かれるかもしれませんね。
いつものマイクのフレーズも演奏されますが優しささえ感じられ、

聴くほどに色々の想いが心に浮かび広がります、それは宇宙であり母なる海でもあるような心安らぐイージーリスニングになっているのです。
なお邦題は小説と同じ「遙かなる地球の歌」

　一つ一つのトラックに場面、深い想いがあり、地球を様々な位置から眺めて旅をするような作りになっている。イン・ザ・ビギニングの壮大な始まり、レット・ゼア・ビー・ライトの美しいメロディはやわらかく広がっていくイメージだ。オンリー・タイム・ウィル・テルは、アコースティック・ギター（？）が奏でるシグナルのような音色から、異世界へ導かれる。この異世界から、私達リスナーは様々なものを感じとれるだろう。ハイバルナキアラムの重厚さを感じさせるコーラス・・・。そして次のチューブラーワールドは、どこか現代的な世界だ。クリスタル・クリアは、落ち着きや深さがある。今まで眺めてきた景色、見た世界を振り返り、自己に目を向けている・・・私はそう感じた。最後のア・ニュー・ビギニングは民族のコーラスのようなもので、まさに新たな始まりを思わせる。
　実に聞き応えのある一枚だ。
