On this, her seventh album proper, Madonna once again shows that one of her greatest talents is her ability to choose collaborators who bring the best out of her. This time around, the producers and co-writers include Bjork, Nellee Hooper (Massive Attack/Soul II Soul) and swing deities Dallas Austin & Babyface (who, amongst a myriad of credits, were the men behind TLC's CrazySexyCool). Mellower in the most part than her previous work, the album includes the usual handful of hits in "Secret", "Human Nature", the title track, and "Take A Bow", a duet with Babyface which is as beautifully glum as anything she's done. While the period between the Erotica/Sex fiasco and her triumphant return with 1998's Ray Of Light was a comparatively lean period commercially for Madonna, this album is up there with the best of her work. --Ronita Dutta

『BEDTIME STORIES＝ベッドの上での御伽話』に乗せて語られる彼女の「内面」は極めて魅惑的なものである。
『EROTICA』は誤解を多く生んだ作品であったが、彼女自身の試みは「セクシュアリティ」を表現することを通じて、人間の「内面」を構築する「法」の権力を暴露することにあったように思う。本作はその「内面（inside of me）」を自分自身で巧みに再構築することにより、逆にその「内面」の虚構性を効果的に浮かび上がらせている。
オープニングの『SURVIVAL』は、現実の彼女の経歴を想像させる歌詞の上に、彼女なりの「実存」主義が歌い上げられる。続く『SECRET』も神秘的なメッセージ性を持つ楽曲で、この辺りは後の『RAY OF LIGHT』への布石となっているといえるだろう。

音楽的には、ダラス・オースティン、ベイビーフェイスなど、当時のR&Bの最良の流れを汲み取った、彼女ならではの質の高い楽曲群が並べられている。発表から10年が経過した現在でも一聴に値する作品である。

アンダーグラウンドでもあり、当時のヒップホップで使われていた、ニュー・ジャック・ファンクを多用した作品。正直に言うと、歌詞もそうお下劣ではないし、エロティズムというと何かいやらしい感じがするが、きれいな歌詞のような気がする。また、ヒップホップと比べるとなお更そうなる。ライナーノーツを見てると、同じことが書いてあるけど、印象がライナーノーツどおりだ。つまり、R＆B路線ということ。マドンナとR＆B路線。今聞いても十分堪能できる。また、彼女特有のクラシック的なサウンドも健在で、とってもいいと思う。ベイビー・フェイス、ダラス・オースティンなどの大物R＆Bプロデューサーを起用して、成功しているのも面白い。声質が黒人に似ているのかな?似てない部分があるから、ポップスなのか?

　とにかく、聴きやすい。どれがいいかは今回は推薦しないが、全体的にタイトルとはぜんぜん違う。タイトルで引いている熱血漢はCDだけ、見ておくといい。曲、楽曲、声、すべて申し分なし。

エロティカ、SEX、BODYといった怒涛のエロ３部作の発表によりすっかり世間様から理解不能のレッテルを貼られそうになった彼女が起死回生作品第一弾として９４年秋に発表したのが本作。内容はタイトルが示す「夢語り-Bedtime Stories-」をそのまま音楽にした、何とも言えぬメロウでロマンティックなもの。この時点で彼女が優れていたのはやはりその時代を読む嗅覚の鋭さだ。今でこそ所謂ブラック・ミュージックがチャートで幅を利かせている状況は当たり前だが、当時はまだそういった音楽がポップスの領域を征服するには認知があまり高くなかった時代。そんな時代にその世界では既に名を轟かせていた売れっ子R&Bアーティスト「Babyface」や「Dallas Austin」等をプロデューサーとして起用し、ニュージャック・スウィングといった跳ねるリズムの流行が消えたブラック・ミュージック界の新しいトレンドであるメロウなスロウ・グルーヴをいち早く自身の作品に取り入れ完成させたのだ。そればかりではない。Bjorkのソロ発表に伴い、更に知名度が上がった「Nellee Hooper」や前作からのシングル「Fever」のビデオ・ヴァージョンのリミックスでその名を轟かせた「Daniel Abraham」を同時に起用することで１種のスパイスをアルバムに利かせることに成功している。チャートアクションも好調で、このアルバムからのセカンド・シングル「Take　A　Bow」はビルボード紙にて彼女のキャリア史上最長１位保持記録（ポップス・チャートでは７週、アダルトコンテンポラリー・チャートでは９週）を樹立。マドンナのキャリアを強いて初期後期に分けるなら、後期はこの作品から始まったと言えよう。世間的には地味な印象が漂う作品ではあるようだが、名盤である。

マドンナのファン倶楽部にも所属している私ですが、個人的にとても長く
聴けるアルバム。Ｒ＆Ｂ好きなら是非もう一度聴いて欲しい。おすすめです。
