本作が出た時点で，もう一線を退いた感のあったMichael McDonald．私は，数年前に街中のCD屋さんで500円で売り叩かれている本作を買った．そのときには，本作が出ていたことさえ知らなかったのだが，なかなかよくていい拾いものだと思いやした．プロデューサにRuss Titelmanのクレジットがある．Russ Titelmanと聞いてピンとくる人には，一聴をお勧めしたい．あのSteve Winwood復活の烽，"Back in the high life"を手掛けた人だ．参加ミュージシャンもある程度共通しているし，ホーンセクションをフィーチャーしたアレンジも，あの作品を彷彿とさせるといっていいでしょう．

そんなアレンジの中で，彼のヴォーカルにミョーにリキが入っているのが意外といえは意外．どういう歌い方をしようと，「いい声」というのはすごい武器だとしみじみ思う．Michael McDonaldという人に思い入れの強い方の一部は，そんな誰かの作品に似ていると言えなくもない本作を評価しないかもしれないけれど，そういうものがない私にとって，本作は一枚の作品として高いクオリティをもっているように聴こえた．

Doobie時代から、８２年のソロになってからずっと聴き続けているリスナーの一人として、本作品を事の外気に入ってしまった。このアルバムを聴くまで、私にとってもベストワンはやはりソロデヴューアルバムだった。その後ポップスに著しく傾斜したり（時代の流れだと思うけれど）、Ｒ＆Ｂのベスト盤を出したりしているが、本当に最近のアルバムはちょっと自身の声に依存し過ぎて歌っている気がしてならない。でも本作品は、個人的には夏の終わりに聴くベストアルバムだと思う。始めは少し奇異に思える曲も、次第に何か「遊び心」さえ感じ取れるし、Ｓｔｅｅｌｙ　Ｄａｎ程、聴く人を選ぶような堅苦しさ（完成度は高い）もない。車に例えるなら安全を重視するベンツがＳｔｅｅｌｙ　Ｄａｎなら、スリルを味わうＢＭＷがまるで彼の本作品のよう。以前の流れを汲んだ「No More Prayin'」に対して、気軽に彼の世界が楽しめる「East of Eden」、「Hey Girl」、そして秋を予感させるようなちょっと寂しげだけど、ぐっとくる「For a child」。このラスト曲は、本当に最後の最後までそのメロディーを、楽器が奏でる調和に聴き入り、もっと先が聴きたいのにフェードアウトしていく感じ。以前同様の思いがSteely Danの名盤「Aja」の一曲目「Black Cow」で感じた感覚に近い。
Michael McDonaldファン、ＡＯＲファン、そして履き慣れたジーンズのような音楽が好きな人にはお勧めだ。
