　ニューオーダーはとしては90年代に発表した唯一のアルバムで、この時期は各メンバーのソロ活動が活発な時期でもあり、バンド的な結束を感じさせるサウンドではなく、各自が個別に作業をしたパーツを組み合わせたかのような完全なる打ち込みエレポップ路線の曲が並びます。しかし、それでもシングル曲に見られるように脅威の美メロ・抜群に洗練されたアレンジと、彼らのアルバムの中では最も聴きやすいです。最初に聴くならこのアルバムかもしれない。

今朝、ハードロックで育った夫が珍しくこのCDをかけてた。
何年経っても、あ〜。そうそう。このアルバムが聴きたかったんだよね。
と、引っ張り出してきて聴きたくなるアルバム。

このアルバムが出た当時は現実への不満と将来への不安が入り混じってて
「これからどうなってしまうのか。どうしたいのかも分からない。」という心境にどの曲もマッチしていた。

RegretはNew Orderの中で今でも１番好きな曲。World、Spooky等もリピート。
最近のNew Orderファンでもきっと気に入っていただけるはず。

当然私はこのアルバムの発売と同時に購入し聴いていた。しかし当時New Orderは解散説が流れていて、バーナードも、「もうNew Orderではアルバムを作らない」などと言っていたのだ。そういう意味ではNew Orderの前半のまとめのようなアルバムだ。1981年にMovementに始まり、Republicまで来て、ここまでやればこれ以上はNew Orderでなくなる、という流れにあるアルバムである。その証拠に（証拠じゃないけど）このアルバム以降ベスト版をせっせと作り、メンバーはソロ活動に励み、New Orderはいつなくなってもおかしくないかのように見えていた。１０年以上たって、私は当時の「とても不安だけど、実は不安じゃないかもしれないという」期待を思い出す。今となって、ほっとしてこのアルバムを聴ける。New Orderの最新の曲を聴いて「イギリスの最重要バンドらしいけど、それって何？」と思った人はこのRepublicを勧める。その前のアルバムも全部聞いてほしいのはやまやまだけど。
ちなみに私はこのRepublicはアメリカ発売のソフトカバー（何かビニールのビーチボールの材質みたいな）で持っています。
