Album Details

Japanese only SHM pressing. The SHM-CD [Super High Material CD] format features enhanced audio quality through the use of a special polycarbonate plastic. Using a process developed by JVC and Universal Music Japan discovered through the joint companies' research into LCD display manufacturing SHM-CDs feature improved transparency on the data side of the disc allowing for more accurate reading of CD data by the CD player laser head. SHM-CD format CDs are fully compatible with standard CD players.

このアルバム、ピコピコした音と表現されることがありますが、私にはそうは聴こえません。
たぶんギターのブリッジ・ミュートした単音カッティングのリフの音を指していると思いますが。
これはこういう奏法なので非常にきれいにキマっていると思います。（コンプレッサーくさい感じがしなくもないですが）
この手の奏法はアル・ディ・メオラやパコ・デ・ルシアなどが非常に得意とするもので、ウォルター・ベッカーも得意でよく使います。
１曲目のギターの高音部でのファンキーなカッティングはちょっとコンプレッサーで整え過ぎかと思いますが、許容範囲でしょう。

このアルバムはアーバンロック寄りのAORとしては、非常に完成度が高いと思います。
夜のハイウェイのドライブのお供に最適で、たら〜っと聴き流すのにも耳に心地よいですが、注意して聴けば毎回新しい発見があるような仕掛けも随所に見られます。
ドナルド・フェイゲン健在と思います。

私がスティーリー・ダン〜ドナルド・フェイゲンのアルバムで一番好きなのは、フェイゲンのソロ第一弾ナイトフライで、次にガウチョ、幻想の摩天楼の順で、エイジャ（彩）はその次くらいです。
このアルバムはその次くらいでしょうか。
とにかく、最初聴いたときパッとしない印象を受けても聴き続けると味が出てくるアルバムだと思います。

あらためてスティーリー・ダンのと説明する必要もないドナルド・フェーガンのソロアルバム。緻密に計算された彼らしい完璧な音作りになっています。上質のAORシテイ・ミュージックの名盤だと思います。ジャケ写真とは関係ないですが、個人的にはドライブミュージックなどにピッタリだと思います。AOR伝説の名盤「The Nightfly」も合わせて是非聴いてください。

歴史的名作「ナイトフライ」から10年ぶりの新譜ということで、発売当時は話題になった。完璧にサウンドを作り込んでいるので10年に１枚しか作れないと嘘宣伝がされていたが、実はブタ箱に行っていた（罪名は伏せる）。表題のとおりカマキリのようにシャープなサウンドだが、加工しすぎで音が軽い。エレキギターがファミコンみたいにピコピコ鳴っているのは勘弁してほしい。

楽曲はスティーリー・ダンの変態的コード進行から、前作でも見られたレゲエのようなシンプルなノリの曲に興味が移っているようだ。それでもフェイゲン節は健在で、声の調子が良かったらと思わせるメロディの佳曲が揃っている。

ひねくれ度が薄まり開放的になった曲に合わせて、演奏もリラックス感あるものだ。前作のように人間がマシーン化してるような超精確な演奏は息が詰まるので、この作品のほうが好きだし、良く聴いている。ウォルター・ベッカーのレイドバック感ある演奏も全体の雰囲気に寄与している。スタジオミュージシャンのビッグネームに頼らなくなって、彼の出番が大いに増えたのも、ベッカーファンとしては嬉しい。
