92年リリース、80年代以降のNeil作品中で最も穏やかな表情を持った作品。72年にリリースとの関連がよく言われますし、実際、音の感じや歌われる歌詞からすると20年の間をおいた続編となるでしょう。
初めてNeil Youngの声を聞いたのがその"Harvest"でした。本作との20年間、Neilの本質は全くといっていいほど変わっていないことを感じ、何か嬉しいような満たされた気持ちが湧いてきます。70年代から20年、ロックもアメリカ社会も大きく動きましたが、それがさも螺旋階段を振り返るかのように、穏やかなひと時に導いてくれる、そんな作品です。

彼のUn-pluggedでも歌われた"Unknown legend"、"From Hank to Hendrix"やJazz VocalのCasｓandra Willsonが名作"Moon daughter"で取り上げた"Harvest moon"などは忘れられない名曲ですし、夕暮れの美しさを思わせる落ち着きがとても魅力的です。また、まさにNeil節といえる音の取り方が嬉しくなっちゃう"One of these days"などもいい出来です。
"Cowgirl..."や"Like a hurricane"で披露してくれた強靭なギターリフも怒涛の押しも大好きですが、本作では出てきません。そちらの方の魅力は他の作品でたっぷり聞けますもんね。ここでは魅力的にいい年の取り方をしている、羨ましい姿のNeilの歌にひたるとしましょう。また、"Harvest"がお気に入りの方には間違いなく支持されるであろう作品です。

３０年ぶりの第二期収穫期をむかえたヤングの傑作。バックのサウンドは変幻自在に変化するが、彼の歌の本質は余り変わらないように見える。彼の歌声はいつも風の中から聞こえてくるような気がして好きです。ジャケットと音がぴったりです。

　新作「プレイリー・ウィンド」の評価が異様に高いことから本作の意味をあらためて考えた。ニール・ヤングのアルバムの売れ行き、たとえば全米や全英、そしてこのアマゾンの売れ行きの傾向から言えることがある。ニールの作品系列にはクレイジー・ホース系（ハード）とストレイ・ゲーターズ系（ソフト）がある。あの「ミラー・ボール」の売れ行きはパール・ジャムのファンが購入したと考えれば説明がつくから除外すると、あきらかに後者の系列が人気が高いのだ。これは、ニールというと「アフター・ザ・ゴールド・ラッシュ」のソフトなイメージが定着していることを意味する。
　わたくしの解釈はまったく逆だ。ニールの魅力は端的に前者に現れていると思っている。本当はアコースティックが好きなのだけれども、エレキにも興味があってちょっと手を出してはみるけれども、本当はフォーク的なサウンドが好き、そんな分裂したニールに惹かれるのだ。そうみるわたくしからすると、「一見メロウなサウンドだが剛直さを忘れない」という本アルバムへの評価は贔屓しすぎに見える。やはりニールは無理をしてハードなサウンドを演じて見せるそのけなげさにあると思うからである。
　それにしても、「歌心」とか「アコースティック回帰」とか、ソフト系のアルバムを褒めるのは実に簡単である。そして実際ファンと発売側の好みが重なっては致し方ないのかもしれない。
