マドンナのアルバムの中では賛否両論のある作品。
この作品で大幅なセールスダウンをした事で次作の
ベットタイムストーリーズを売れ線Ｒ＆Ｂに
移行させた問題作。個人的にはマドンナの中では
一番好きなアルバム。
当時のクラブでかかりまくったシングル曲erotica,
deeper＆deeper,fever等クラブヒットも数多く
アンダーグラウンドの怪しい匂いプンプンの一方で

レイン、バッドガール等バラードでも聴かせてくれます。
発売後10年経った今でもたまに聞いてしまいます。

かつてポップスの世界がブレイクビートアレンジのアルバムで埋め尽くされた時期があったが、そのキッカケを作ったのはこのアルバムだったと思う。- あのメジャーなマドンナがアルバムでやってたから大丈夫 -ってところか。やはり時代の音を作るアーティストなのである。

私は高校のときこのＣＤを聴きまくっていました。一言でいえば、とにかく暗い。「なぜ人を愛する事はこれほど難しいの」と歌う「why's it so hard」に始まり「好きでもない男とキスしてる、こんな私は幸せじゃない」と歌う「bad girl」…。自省的で、時として自虐的になる歌詞には彼女の喪失感、焦燥感、自己嫌悪がにじみ出ている。それらから必死に逃げようとしてsubsitute for love；名声、そして…“エロティカ”！に手を出してしまう姿が痛々しい。そして「in this life」においてＡＩＤＳで死んだ無名時代の恩人について歌っている。今降り返って見ると、出産後の「悟った」マドンナの前の、最後の自虐的なマドンナかもしれない。

　サウンド面では、シェップ・ぺティボーンとによるやや無機質で冷徹な感じのする音作りで、青を基調としたジャケットと上手く同調していて、どこかヨーロッパ的である。洗練、アーティスティック、クールファンク、幻想的、そういったところでしょうか。マドンナ作品に共通するへビィーなビート、エレクトロニック・リズムトラックは健在です。その様な音楽が相対的に寒々しい心のうちをえぐりだす…。問題提起の色濃いアルバムなので、「express yourself」や「vouge」のような底抜けにポジティブな楽曲はありません。

個人的には大好きですし、歌詞表現は五つ星なのですが、音楽面から言うとやや凡庸なのは否めません。彼女の人生のターニングポイント、という点では重要なアルバムではありますが。
