ベストなどで曲単位でつまみぐいしちゃいけません。
このアルバム一枚で一作品です。
曲順もいいしライヴ感のあふれるレコーディング。めちゃくちゃ音がリアルです。
爆音で聴きたいアルバムのいい例！！！！
内容はといえば注目を浴び始めた「母乳」よりもファンク色が増し、スピードは速くはない曲が多いです。
しかしギタリスト・ジョンの若い才能は爆発しこれでもか！と言うくらいレッチリのヘヴィーな面を押し出してます。
ベース・フリーも曲のためにスラップを捨てほとんど指弾き。今までの冗談なくらいのアップテンポを捨て曲を活かすためのアレンジに徹しています。
捨て曲ナシです。ロックを語るには欠かせない一枚。

　このアルバムをＣＤショップで試聴した時、フリーのベースプレイのあまりのかっこよさについ衝動買いしてしまいました。ラリーグラハムを彷彿とさせる力強いスラップベースと、ツーフィンガーによる美しいベースランニングの両方を楽しめる美味しいアルバムという印象を持ったからです。リフもソロもとにかく思わずコピーしたくなるようなかっこよいものばかりです。

　テクニックのあるベーシストのアルバムはなんでもかんでもベースでやってしまって個人的にあまり好きではありませんが（それはそれでテクニックやアイディア的にはすごいことであるけれども・・）、レッチリのこのアルバムで聴けるフリーのベースプレイは、バンドのベーシストの役割の中でやるべきことをやりながらきっちり主張もしているという印象を受け、非常に好感が持てます（ベースが中心になっているような曲ばかりなので当然かもしれませんが）

　全体的にはオーヴァーダビングを必要最小限に抑えた非常に生々しい作風と、力強い演奏が素晴らしいです。楽曲もアコースティックなバラードからハードロック風なもの、ファンク風なものまで非常にバラエティ豊か。人間が演奏する生々しい本物の音楽を求めている方は是非聴いてみてください。あとレッドツェッペリンのファンの方で「多種多様なジャンルのゴッタ煮的な音楽性」という側面が好きというような人や、ジミヘンドリックスの音楽が好きな人なんかもけっこうはまれるのではないかと思います。

意外なほど他の方の言及がないのが驚きだが、このアルバムは他のチリペッパーズのアルバムに比べ明らかに一線を画した作品だ
それは最高傑作とかそういう問題ではなく、根本的に土俵の違う音なのである


これ以降の作品は明らかにサビ偏重の、誤解を恐れずに言えば産業ロック風情の漂う作風。この作品のファンクネスとは似ても似つかない
それじゃこの作品の前の四作とこれは同じ匂いがするのか?と言われれば、はっきり言って全く違う。
最初の二作はお遊び風だからナシとしても、三四作目のようなありがちな80年代風テクニック偏重メタルの匂いは、この作品にはしてこない

まずが音を重ねることを拒んだマスタリングがペナペナだ。売れるための作り方でない。
しかしそれは骨太なビートを消すことを意味せず、むしろ剥き出しにバンドのジャムの素晴らしい緊張感を伝えている
スラップ、フィルを極力封印したフリーとチャドの職人ビートも、並の技巧者はしたがらないプレイ
キーディスの歌詞はエロ要素はいつものように含みつつも、いつもと違いどこか政治的でシリアス
そして何といってもフルシアンテの、まるでジミヘンが蘇ったかのようなギターが光る。このギタリストがこのタイプのプレイを見せているのはこの作品だけ。むしろ今はクラプトン的な泣きの奏法を得意とし、この作品での面影は感じられない。

シングルはあのバラード含め当然傑作揃いだが、僕はむしろ2、4、7、16あたりを聞いて欲しい。ファンクともラップロックとも違う、このバンドのオリジナリティが炸裂している曲目だ。
