かれこれ30年経つんですネ、Ry Cooderを初めて聴いたのが本作した。米国南部の土煙りと日焼けした顔、すすけたジーンズの仲間が集まる酒場に似合いそうな歌の数々（1,3,7,10あたりはまさにこの感じ）。人間臭さっていうか武骨さまで憶える純朴さがとても印象深く、魅力的でした。そのインパクトの強さなんでしょうか、その後Ryの名作数あれど自分にとってはニワトリの刷り込みよろしく、今も本作に執着し続けています。
そして本作のハイライトは、RyのSlide guitarが極上の味わいで切ないほど心を揺さぶる"Dark end of the street"。同じインストの"Maria Elena"も素朴でいい感じです。

本作以降、中南米を皮切りに沖縄（喜納昌吉と共演した"花"も印象的でした）、ハワイと様々な伝統音楽を取り入れながら孤高のワールドミュージシャンとなっていくRyですが、彼の原点がここに凝縮されていると感じています。
ときに無性に聞きたくなって棚から引っ張り出す、在庫中でも５指に入る年季の入ったCD（かつてはレコードでしたが）がこれです。

うーん。しびれる。邦題は「流れ者の物語」。アメリカ大陸をさすらう放浪者のイメージを唄ったアルバム。ひたすらに自由だが、軋むギターの旋律で奏でられる孤独と郷愁、独特の乾いた抒情にしびれる。男の旅、ここに極まれりである。白眉はLP時代のB面冒頭、CDだと6曲目の「Dark End of The Street」。アメリカの広大な大地にどこまでも続く道、空にはコンドルが飛んでいく。そんなところに行く気もないくせに（笑）、仮想イメージの中で、わたしは目を細めて遠く地平線を見やるのであった。

オリジナルＬＰやかつて発売されたアメリカ盤ＣＤに入っていたデータ＋セッション風景写真のインサートが入っていない。致命的サボり。いい加減な紙ジャケなら作らないほうがマシ。
