詩曲アレンジ…退廃的イメージのバンドの頂点ともいえるＤＭのアルバムの中でも群を抜く完成度と「暗さ」…無駄や妥協の一切無い、非常に研ぎ澄まされたある種の「緊張感」がアルバム全体を支配し、それが美しくもある。海底の地を這うような「暗さ」は、その手が好きな者にはたまらない魅力であろう。世紀末1990年代の幕開けを告げたＤＭの最高傑作。

Depeche Modeの代表作、最高傑作と名高い90年発表のアルバムです。
この時点までの、約10年のキャリアの中でもDepeche Modeというバンドが最も
充実した時期の作品だと思います。

ダークながらもポップで覚えやすく、思わず口ずさんでしまいそうな楽曲は勿論、
艶やかなデイブのヴォーカルに、暖かみのあるアナログ･シンセサイザーの音色、
比重を増したギターの存在、決して派手ではなくともウェットで優しい抜群のサウンド処理等、
非常にハイクオリティな作品になってます。

個人的にはMarilyn Mansonがカヴァーした3.Personal Jesusや、壮大な雰囲気のサビが印象的な4.Halo、
抜群の完成度を誇る名曲、6.Enjoy The Silence、アンビエントのような雰囲気を持ったラスト曲、Cleanが好きです。

紛れもないDepeche Modeの最高傑作。
哲学的な歌詞、太いシンセ&ドラムス。強烈なメロディーと曲の構成力、
当時最高技術を駆使したエンジニアリング。

彼らの最高潮の時代を記録した恐るべき音響作品。
