７９年作。冷たく乾ききったサウンド、呪詛の言葉を呟くような陰鬱なボーカル、難解な詩世界。同じ感覚を共有できない、誰からも理解されない、彼自身にしか理解できない、しかし他の誰にもたどり着けない世界、崇高で孤独な高みへとどこまでも果てしなく昇りつめ、閉ざされていく。２ndと比べるとまだ嘆きの度合いが多い分だけ絶望的ではないのかもしれない。陽気な表情を見せることもあるが、そういう所にこそかえって冷めたものを感じる。自分を見つめるもう一人の自分の冷めた視線。２nd「Closer」には劣るけど名作。ただ、こっちの方が若干聞きやすいかも。
「Disorder」は特に聞きまくった曲。ベースに、立ちくらみが来てガクンとなるような動きがあり、個人的にはそこが病みつきになった。「Day of the Lords」は一見単調に思えるが、その単調さは全て最後の爆発のためにある。「Candidate」は不気味な軋みが精神を侵してくるかのようだ。虚しく繰り返される言葉…やるせなくてたまらなくなる。「New Dawn Fades」はダークだが何とも切ない響きに胸をしめつけられる。「Shadowplay」はギター旋律が妙にそそり、非常にカッコイイ。「Interzone」はノリがよく熱狂的、詩世界・二つのボーカルのスリリングなやり取りにしびれる。「I Remember Nothing」はただただ深く深く沈み込んでいく。

Joy Divisionこそはツェッペリンやストーンズがビッグ・ビジネスに成り果てた時代に登場した真正ロックバンド。『She's Lost Control』、『Shadow Play』、『Interzone』、これらナイフの先端のようなショッキングなサウンドは聞く者を潜在意識の深みへと突き落とす。Joy Divisionのギグはしばしば右翼によって妨害されたというが、それもうなずける。この Unknown Pleasures は Joy Division のアルバムの中でも特に素晴らしい傑作、これを聞けばマリリン・マンソンの音がいかに退屈だったか気づかされる。ただし波長が合わなければ全く理解できないが。深夜、どでかい音でこのCDを聞くことができるならば、イアン・カーティスという化け物の亡霊に魂を揺さぶられるはず。それは聞く者の個人的な体験であり、新たな驚きに満ちている。

ギリギリのところまで持っていかれてふと覚醒する、そんな感じ。ただアトモスフィアみたいな曲を期待してので、パンクっぽい曲には個人的には勝手に肩透かしかな。
