「ベルリン」「トランスフォーマー」などと並ぶ彼の代表作の１つ。かつての退廃的な匂いは消えたが、その分タイトでシンプルな大人のロックンロールを聴かせてくれる。 最初の「ロミオ・ハッド・ジュリエット」のイントロはいつ聴いても鳥肌が立つほどカッコイイ！！ 「ダーティ・ブールヴァード」はライブでもよく演奏される彼の代表曲の１つ。

このアルバム以後のルー・リードの好調ぶりは言わずもがな。こんな風に年を取りたいもんです。

「２つのギター、ベースとドラム。これに勝るものは無い」と、いう事をルーはアルバムのスリーブに書いているが、全くその通りの内容。シンプルだが腰の据わったギタープレイがアルバム前編を埋めている。このアルバムから突如としてギターのサウンドとプレイがシンプルだが洗練されていて、派手さはないが確実なバックメンバーのサポートもあり、渋いギターアルバムになっている。ボーカルはルーのトーキングスタイルが改めて確立された感がある。ＶＵの頃から美しいメロディーに関しては定評のあるルーだが、正直自分で歌うのは？だと思う。ライブでも頻繁に調子っぱずれになる。しかし、アルバムを通してルーは、ＮＹそしてアメリカについて徹底してストーリーを「語る」事に専念している。このスタイルは派手さは無いがハマるとたまらない魅力がある。このアルバムとその後の「ソングスフォードレラ」「マジックアンドロス」はアンディーウォーホールとルーの友人の死をテーマにした３部作と言っていいもので、「ニューヨーク」が気に入った人には絶対のおすすめです。

確か、ルー・リードのソロアルバムとしては、初めて買ったCD。

聴く人によっては、「エレキギターが伴奏のお経」と思うかもしれないが、私はメロディーラインもたまらなく好きだ。

「も」というのは、曲よりも歌詞の方が好きだからで、英語歌詞だけでは不安な所を、日本語訳が補ってくれるので、そういう点では悔しいけれど国内盤を買わざるを得ませんね、というのが正直なところ。
「間違い探し」も楽しいし。（笑
