１９８８年にリリースされたアルバムで、通算６枚目、メジャー・レーベル「Warner Bros.」へ移籍しての第一弾となります。インディ・バンドの頂点を極めた彼らが次に向かう地平はコレなんだ！という意気込みと強い決心みたいなモノを感じさせるパワフルなエナジーが炸裂するアルバムで、当時はインディ／メジャーの垣根があまりにも高く、彼らも一部のファンからメジャーに媚びを売ってしまったと悪態をつく人もいたようですが、フタをあけてみると、どっこい「R.E.M.」節は変わらず、名曲のオンパレードとなっています。以前と全く変わらないメロディ・メイキングのセンスと、優れたサウンド・プロダクションがもたらす深みを大きく増したサウンドに、彼らがメジャーへ移籍したのは必然的なモノであり、時代が求めていたサウンドがここにあると声を大にして言いたくなるような傑作アルバムとなりました。ルーツ・ライクなインディ・フォーク・ロックからダイナミックなロック・サウンドへと大きな進化を果たしたアルバムと言えます。シングル・カットされ大ヒットを記録した「Stand」「Orange Crush」をはじめ、ダイナミックなロック・サウンドから、アコースティックなバラードまで、多様な変化を持たせながら、アルバム・トータルに完成度が高く、そして彼ら史上最もポップな作品と言えるでしょうか。とりあえず、メジャー移籍は彼らにとって正しい選択だったと実感できる名盤！しかし、この後の大規模なワールドツアーはこれまでになくハードなものとなり、ツアー終了時にはメンバー全員がお互いの顔を見るのも嫌という状態に陥ってしまっていたようで、以降４年以上もツアーを行わなくなってしまいました。それが残念でなりません。

1988年11月発売、R.E.M.のメジャー・デビュー作。メジャーになってなお、ささくれ立った音は際立ったことを示すアルバムとなっている。

特にポップさをみせた1と2、そして最もその歌心が顕著な5など名曲満載で、やはりメジャー・デビューの心意気を感じずにはいられない。日常生活から沸いてくるような詞と曲、そしてシンプルこの上ない演奏はアメリカン・ポップの80年代そのもので心を打つ。
元気がなくなり、元気を誰かに分けて欲しいなと渇望する時、聴いて欲しいアルバムだ。『World Leader Pretend』って今の世の中そのものだぜ。

マイケル・スタイプの書く歌詞は、不思議だ。
殺伐としてるし、病的ともとれるし、ささくれてるし
皮肉でもあるし、偏屈でもあるが柔軟性にも富んでるし、直情的でもあるが
どこか協調性に溢れメッセージ性もある。
そして何より明日を夢見て常に何かを追求している。

メジャーになれば変わるバンドは沢山いる。
だけどR.E.M.は変わらない。マイケル・スタイプは変わらない。

マイケル・スタイプのメッセージは世界を変える。
