バディー・ホリーと一緒に１９５９年に飛行機事故で亡くなったリッチー・バレンスの半生を描いた映画といっても若干１７歳の人生ですが・・・HIT曲もLA　BAMBA、C'MON　LET'S　GO、DONNAぐらいしかないしこの映画がなければ全く知ることもなかった人ですが、映画を見てみるとオールディーズ時代のほのぼのとした時代に熱いライブを繰り広げる毎日を描いていて予想以上に面白かったです。
聴き所は映画にもエディー・コクラン役で出演していたブライアン・セッツァーのSUMMER　TIME　BLUESでしょう。　STRAY　CATSのORIGINAL　COOLにも収録されていないレア・トラックと思いますが

　Luis Valdez監督によるRitchie Valensの伝記映画「ラ・バンバ」(1987年)のサントラです。
　Ritchie Valensは1950年代のロック・スターで、1950年代の「ラ・バンバ」のヒットでロック史に名を残しました（「ローリング・ストーン誌の選ぶ500曲」の中に唯一の英語以外の曲としてランクされたこともあるようです）。Buddy Hollyと共に飛行機事故で亡くなってます。
　このサントラではLos LobosやMarshall Crenshaw, Brian Setzerなどが50年代の名曲をカヴァーしています（12曲中6曲がLos Lobosで、「ラ・バンバ」もLos Lobosによるもの）。演奏はその頃のスタイルに忠実で、素直に「オールディーズをカヴァーした企画盤」として聴くことが出来ます。版権の問題でしょうか、映画の中で使用された"Chantilly Lace","Oh Boy", "Rip It Up", "The Paddi Wack Song","Sleepwalk"などは収録されませんでした。
　ところで。「ラ・バンバ」は300年以上前（！）に作られた有名な曲で、フラメンコとラテンのリズムを融合したものとされており、歌はファルセットで歌うもので、演奏はヴァイオリン・ギター・ハープなどを使うのが普通であったそうです。へぇ〜！

これは聴かなくては…。映画もリッチーの生涯を上手に描いていると思います（実際のリッチーとはまったく似ていないのですが…。）。このサントラもさらにサイコーです。リッチーの曲はロス・ロボスが見事にカバーし、バディ・ホリーはマーシャル・クレンショーが完璧に。なんといってもブライアン・セッツァーです。エディ・コクランを見事に演じきっております。“さすが”って感じですね。ストレイキャッツもＢＳＯも大好きですがソロであるこのサマータイム・ブルースは様々なアーティストの数あるカバーの中でもベストと言えるでしょう。
