確かにバンド内の状況は解散を避けられない最悪な状況だったかもしれない。
しかしこのアルバムは、ビートルズ最終作同様にこのバンドの良さを出せた傑作ではないだろうか？
まあ、スミスの最終作同様の軽さや明るさはあるが、空虚さはなく、非常に素晴らしい作品だと思う。
lips like sugerが気に入った人はぜひ聞いてみて下さい。

また、ここからアルバムをさかのぼって聴いてみるのも良いかと。

　アメリカ市場で勝負を賭けるべく、バンド名をタイトルとして気合を入れた第1期最後の作品。既にバンド内の人間関係が悪化していた結果、濃密なリハの勢いで半ばアドリブで作ったと思われる"Porcupine"までのような仕上がりになるはずもなく、かなり音楽的停滞を感じながら本人達もこの作品を作ったようだ。

　当時、既に英国NWバンドによる第二次ブリティッシュ・インヴェンションはかなり進んでおり、Tears for FearsやSimple Minds、U2が全米シングル・チャートで1位を取ってしばらく経っており、遅れてきた大物としてNew Orderと一緒にJenna Loves Jezebelを前座とした全米ツアーをやったりしていた。このツアーとアルバムでは、レイ・マンザレク（元ドアーズ）をゲストに迎えており、テレビジョンやベルベッツ、ドアーズのカヴァーも行うなど、妙にレトロ趣味なマーケティングをやっていたが、これは彼らの音楽的停滞の結果でもある。結果的に、彼らはピート（Dr.）の交通事故死を期に解散（＝正確にはイアンの脱退による活動休止）をしてしまう。

　こういった時期のこのアルバムの方向性は今の彼らの音の原型になったようであるが、再結成後のアルバムよりも佳曲が揃っているので新しいファンにはオススメ。なお"Blue Blue Ocean"という佳曲が収録されているが、本人達の自己評価は「売れ線すぎる」ということでシングル・カットされなかった。売れたいのか売れたくないのか良く分からないこういう「照れ」が、「彼ららしい」といえば「らしかった」。

前作のシングル・コンピ「Songs To Learn And Sing」をリリースしたあと、バンド内に不協和音が鳴り始め、ドラマーのPete de Freitasが脱退して、元「Haircut100」のMark Foxが加入したかと思えばまたPeteが出戻ったりと、デビュー時からのフォーメーションが不安定になってきた時期に制作されたアルバムとなります。バンド名をアルバムタイトルにしたこの作品にメンバーの意気込みを感じますが、叙情的でシャープな彼らのサウンドに不可欠だったバンドのテンションが落ちている事は否めない作品と言えるでしょうか。不安定さがスリリングだったサウンドに安定感が加わった分、テンションが低下しているような。ただ、チャート・アクションはアメリカで最も高い５１位まで上昇、英国でも４位まで上昇する大ヒットとなったのは皮肉なものです。そして彼ら史上最も暗いニュースとして、このアルバムを最後に、何とヴォーカリストのIanがバンドを脱退してしまい、ソロ・キャリアをスター??させます。そしてドラマーのPeteがバイクで交通事故死するという悲劇に見舞われ、バンド存続も危ういのでは、と思われました。ポップ・マーケット用の作品としてはクオリティは高いが、彼らのキャリアを感じるとちょっと疑問が残るアルバム。傑作ではあるのだけど．．．。
