Digitally remastered and expanded two CD edition of this 1986 album from the Manchester quartet, one of the most successful and consistent bands of the '80s and beyond. After the suicide of vocalist Ian Curtis, the three surviving members of Joy Division regrouped under the band name New Order, adding Gillian Gilbert on keyboards. The rest, as they say, is history. Disc One in this package contains the original album in its digitally remastered glory. Disc Two is filled with eight non-album singles, B-sides and remixes. This is as great as it gets! ニュー・オーダーがファクトリーレコードに残した５枚のオリジナルアルバムのうち４枚目にあたる今作。２枚組で１枚目はリマスターされていて、二枚目はシングルに収録の音源を集めたものだが、中にはアナログ音源をデジタル処理したトラックも含まれていて、海外のファンサイト等ではかなり問題になっている。

アルバム自体はメンバーも語っている通り前作『ロウライフ』のポップな音作りに体する反動で、かなりラフでパンクっぽい内容になっている。フッキーのベースはいつになくリラックスした様子でメロディアスなのに対し、バーニーのギターはフラストレーションをそのまま音に昇華したような、現代音楽スレスレの不協和音に満ちたノイジーな響きを聴かせる。なんというか「ヤケクソ」というか "desperate" というか。でもそれがカッコいい。87年までの１２インチ音源をコンパイルした『サブスタンス』がNOの「構築美」の結晶だとしたら、こちらはNOの「破壊美」をとことん堪能できるというか。パンクにルーツを持つUKのニューウェイヴバンド、としてのNOを最も体現した作品だと思う。

リマスターは、うん、すごい。今回のリマスター再発で一番音が変化したのがこのアルバムだと思うし、それがいい方向に作用したと思う。１曲目・２曲目はほとんど元盤と変わらないのだが、３曲目のイントロのアコギの爪弾きで「あっ違う」と思って。一番違うと思ったのは７曲目・８曲目あたりの、ボーカルのない即興的なインストのパートの持つ、音の塊としての迫力が元の盤と全然違う。９曲目のラスト１分あたりの天にも昇るかのような展開も音の厚みが増したことでぐあーっとこっちを引き込む力が増していて…代表曲中の代表曲 "Bizarre Love Triangle" も、これまでこのアルバムバージョンはShep PettiboneやStephen Hagueによるリミックスと較べて地味な印象があったのだが、初めて「これはいいわ〜」と思った。これもラスト一分くらい、ボーカルなしで同じコード進行をずっと繰り返すパートが…、すごく気持ちいい。元の盤とも『シングルズ』収録の音源とも全然音像が違う。これはNOファンを自認する人なら是非聴いてもらいたい。

さて２枚目のボーナスディスクだが…全体的に音が良くない。特に「1963」と「Touched By…」は哀しくなるくらいに。ただ、"Evil Dust" "True Faith-True Dub（と表記されているが、実際にはEschreamer Mixらしい)""Beach Buggy（これも実際には"Blue Monday 1988 Dub"）の３曲は、すごいレア度の高い音源で。出来不出来、好き嫌いを越えた部分でこれらの音源を収録してくれたのは特筆に値する。これで『International』と被ってる１・４曲目の代わりに"Touched By The Hand Of Dub"とビザラヴの7inch Remixを収録してくれてたら…残念。

これは買って良かったと素直に思う。他の作品についてはリマスターの出来について必ずしもディフィニティブだと思わなかったのだが、これに関しては大正解だと思う。ライナーノーツでStephenがファクトリーの主要スタッフであるアラン・エラスムスについて語っていたコメントも面白かったし（「ファクトリー・ジンバブエ」なんて知らなかったよ…）。

・"State Of The Nation"はDisc2に収録して欲しかった

[Disc2]
・1曲目は"Bizarre Love Triangle(Shep Pettibone Remix)"（"Substance"と同じ）
・"1963"をヘッドホンで聴くとレコード針が拾うノイズのような音が随所に聴こえる（バージョンは"Substance"と同じ）
・"Touched By The Hand Of God"の開始から30秒までの間、音にはっきりと分かる異常がある。その後もヘッドホンで聴くとレコード針が拾うノイズのような音が所々に聴こえる（バージョンは"International"と同じ）
・"Evil Dust"をヘッドホンで聴くと冒頭にレコード針が拾うノイズのような音が聴こえる
・"True Faith(True Dub)"はタイトル表記ミスで、正確には"True Faith(Tall Paul Remix)"。これはフルレングスとしては初CD化。"The Factory Years"と銘打っているにも関わらずFactory倒産後の1994年の音源が使用されている事になる。
・"Beach Buggy"はタイトル表記ミスで、正確には"Blue Monday '88(Dub)"

　音楽的には前作の「ロウ・ライフ」の延長線上といえる４ｔｈ。そのため地味な印象を与えるかもしれないが、自分はこのアルバムをふと聴くことが多い。このアルバムには例えば名曲と呼べるものは「Bizarre Love Triangle」ぐらいしかないかもしれないが、しかしどの曲も洗練されたものばかりだと思う。

　このアルバムまでのニューオーダーの歴史はジョイ・ディヴィジョンからの確立であったと思う。（そういった彼らの総決算がこの次にでた「サブスタンス」だろう。その証拠が５ｔｈ「テクニーク」におけるそれまでとは違った躍動感にあふれたサウンドなのではないだろうか。）
　それを考えるとこの４ｔｈは自分達の音を完全に確立した後なだけあって、スタイルの追求といったことから解放されている分、気張ったところがなく伸びやかに聴こえるのだ。

　ニューオーダーを聴いていく順序としてはこのアルバムは一番最後でいいかもしれない。しかし、決して凡作ではないと思います。
