Songs to Learn and Sing is a staple in the collection of post-new-wave rock. It was an era when the term progressive had just replaced the word alternative to describe music that was just too cool for American radio. This album is a compilation of Echo and the Bunnymen's British chart toppers from 1980 to 1985. The only song on this album that received attention beyond the band's cult following was "Bring on the Dancing Horses," made famous by its inclusion in the Pretty in Pink soundtrack. Echo and the Bunnymen are a tinny, twangy, ever-so-slightly-out-of-tune guitar band. What lead singer Ian McCulloch lacked in vocal range he made up for by embracing his comfort zone with full-force cracking, emotional yelps. 先日のサマソニでのステージを観るかぎり、同期にあたるU2やニュー・オーダーの現役バリバリ感や、長い冬眠から目覚めたかのように精力的なモリッシーやキュアーの佇まいと較べると、現在の彼らはあまりにも黄昏れていた。しかし、そんな彼らにも若く輝いていた時があった。彼らのベスト盤はもっと曲数の多いものがもう一枚出ているが、正直こっちの方がアルバムとしての統一感があってよい。何より完成度こそ低いが、ある意味若さ故の荒削りさが最も前に出ている「パペッツ」はこっちでしか聴けないし。
今聴いても「カッター」や「キリング・ムーン」、そして下手なテクノやハウスより数倍踊れる「ネヴァー・ストップ」などは８０年代を代表する名曲だと断言できる。しかし、彼らがビートルズやストーンズ、ドアーズやヴェルヴェット・アンダーグラウンドなどの６０~７０年代の古典をこよなく愛するサイケデリアでしかないことは、このベスト盤を聴けばはっきり分かってしまう。はじめから彼らの視線は過去を見ていた。新しい音を産み出すことをレゾンデートルにしていた８０年代組の中で、彼らはひたすら遺産の継承とノスタルジアを武器に闘っていた。それらはいくつかの素晴らしい歌を産み落とした。それで充分だと思う。
ところがレトロに徹することが魅力につながる時代はそう長く続かなかった。そして、エコバニはこのベスト盤を出した時点で事実上終わった。だから、５枚目のアルバム以降その後の彼らにずっと「終わった」感が漂うのは当然なのだ。我々がしてやれるのはここに収められた数々の歌の輝きを愛でることぐらいである。

パンクの荒々しさを引きずったRescueやDoItCleanの激情から、ダンサブルな要素を加えたNeverStopの絶望を前に踊るしかない狂気、弦楽団が耽美的なKillingMoonやSilverなどの完全なる孤独と断絶、アコギが美しく少し明るさの射すSevenSeas、そしてふっきれたように淡々と控えめに希望と決意を漲らせたBringOnTheDancingHorsesへ。1980年から85年までの11枚のシングルをほぼ発売順に並べただけのただのシングルコンピレーションなのに、それ以上の、バンドの成長記録とでもいうべき一枚を貫くストーリー性が確かにある。それは、真夜中から明け方へ／真冬から春へ／絶望から希望へと向かっており、むしゃくしゃするときなんかに一枚通して聴くと、最後には刺々しかった心が癒されてしまう、そんなマジックを持っている。

最高傑作アルバム「Ocean Rain」をリリースしたあと、バンドは方向性を失ったか、限界を感じたのか...最高傑作の誉れ高い、彼らのクールなサウンドから暖かみのあるサウンドへとシフトしたシングル「Bring on the Dancing Horses」をリリースした後、沈黙期間に入ります。これはその期間にリリースされたシングル・コンピレーションで、彼らの歴史をひもとくにはもってこいと言える充実した内容です。そりゃシングル・コンピだから当たり前か、という話もありますが、前出のシングルを収録した唯一の作品であるわけで、やっぱり必聴盤であることは疑いようもありませんね。実際、彼らの作品を全て実体験してきた僕自身も発売日に買って、堪能したアルバムでありました。当たり前だが、名作です！
