サンボーンの真髄を体感するにはライヴしかない。ライヴで聴く彼のサックスの魅力は筆舌に尽くし難いものがある。Ｒ＆Ｂバンドで鍛え上げた彼のホーンは本物のBluesを血肉化した強烈な訴求力と、彼独自のワン＆オンリーなヴォイスで、ワンフレーズだけで人々を魅了してしまう力を持っている。これは残念ながらCDではなかなか全貌が伝わってこない。スタジオレコーディングによるCDでは、コンパクトに作品としてまとめあげられていて、本来の彼のインプロヴァイザー、サックス奏者としての魅力が生かしきれていないような気がしてしまう。しかしながら、この唯一のソロライヴアルバムはそんな魅力的な”生”に一番近い体験ができる。このアルバムでは、プロデューサー/ベーシストのマーカス･ミラーがすばらしい仕事をしてくれており、タイトル通り、サンボーンの魅力がダイレクトに伝わってくる。また、今は亡きDon Grolnick(Kb)やHiram Bullock(g)、Buddy Williams(ds)によるバンドのタイトなコンビネーションもすばらしく、ゾクゾクするようなバンドサウンドが満喫できる。

８４年発表のライブアルバムの少ないデヴィッドサンボーンにとって貴重なライブアルバムです。メンツ的にも、ｂにマーカスミラー、ｇにハイラムブロック、ｄｒにバディウィリアムス、ｋｅｙにドングロルニックという強力布陣で申し分の無いものになっています。サウンド的には、この時代を代表すフュージョンになっていますが、何せライブだけに、情感的なサンボーンのｓａｘはよりエモーショナルに、また、ワキを固めるメンツも、決して目立ったプレイをしているわけでないのですが、ここぞという時には、彼らならではの音を聞かせてくれます。また、より素晴らしいのは、皆がツワモノばかりであり、ライブならではの盛り上がりを聞かせようという一体感が感じられること。これぞライブという醍醐味を楽しめるアルバムです。

"Straight to the heart"。いいですねえ。これ、この曲でのデビッド・サンボーンのソロで彼のエモーショナルな部分が良い形で出ていて、何度聴いても感動します。彼の懸命に盛上がろう的精神が好きですなあ。これはライブ盤なので、マーカス・ミラーを始めとしてみんなクールだけど熱く盛上がって素晴らしい。既にお亡くなりのドン・グロルニックのキーボードにはちょっとラテン的な香りがして熱い感じでいいです。彼が今のライブシーンにいなくて非常に残念です。また、この頃は、フュージョン・ドラマーと言えばバディ・ウィリアムスの存在が大きかったですね。ここでも彼のちょっとカクカクした特徴のある叩き方が功を奏して演奏がかっこ良くなっています。そして、ハイラム・ブロック！　ところで、この後ツアーに出る際のリズム隊が変遷を繰り返してきて今に至る訳ですけど、僕としてはもっとライブ盤を出して欲しかったです。スティーブ・ローガン＋テリ・リン・キャリントンとか、デニチェン入ってた時とか、ドン・アライアスがばりばり頑張ってた時とか、いろいろあったのにこれしか正式ライブ盤が無いのが少し寂しいです。(映像はありますけど、CDでももっと出して欲しいのである）
